Introduction and Welcome
---
Will Ridgway: Hello, and welcome to the Architecture Social show. I'm Will Grimsley. And who am I with Steve? It's you, Steve Drew.
Stephen Drew: Yeah, it's me. It is me.
Live Test and Audience Interaction
---
Stephen Drew: I hope it's me, but it is so well, we're going to do a live test and this is about the point when everyone's zooming in anyways, and, it'll take a few minutes for people to come on.
Stephen Drew: So I'm not too sure where the voices work this week. So tell me now, how's my voice changed? Does it, is it sound normal or does it sound normal? That sounds normal, unfortunately. Okay. No voices this week. So I'll have to do a.
Stephen Drew: Welcome to the Architecture Social show. Yeah. So before we go into it, guys, look what I've got. Now this is [00:01:00] my thing, which helps me with my hands. So when I'm on the phone with you now, I've got like this on my desk. I see. So I constantly know what's going on. I constantly know if you're working or not.
Stephen Drew: I've got my hand. And so whenever I go to the living room or anything, what I got to do now, can you imagine seeing this site in my hand? I take
Will Ridgway: this
Stephen Drew: to the living room.
Will Ridgway: Seems like a bit of a hassle, but I'll see how you get on with it.
Stephen Drew: I'll let you know. We'll do a product review, but I hope everyone's well.
Stephen Drew: And so I can see a few people are signing in. It's awesome to have you here. We've got a really good show. We've actually got so much news at the moment, haven't we? And what I was, and what I was going to say is a lot of this, we're going to do from within the Architecture Social. So if you're not part of it already, I'll just put a little banner up.
Stephen Drew: You can join the community on architectorsocial. com for such join. And so you can see now that we're going live. Ooh, they got the little live button there. And so what [00:02:00] I've started doing is because everyone was starting to ask about links within the podcast. Morning, Dr. Liz, how are you? Or afternoon, Dr.
Stephen Drew: Liz, it's one o'clock. Nice life of summer there, morning. I love Dr. Liz. We did a podcast as well which was really good fun. And we'll link that here. You can find all this stuff on the Architecture Social. But jumping straight into it now, all the links that we do I'm going to be posting in the industry news with you, Will, and we've got events and we can talk about everything.
Showcasing the Smart House of the Future
---
Stephen Drew: So jumping straight into it, I thought we'd have a bit of fun at the start. There was something that I really wanted to a little bit architectural, but also a little bit interesting. Should we start off with this, Will, the concept house? So everyone, guys, because we're, we're all living in smart houses now.
Stephen Drew: This was one in 1989 they predicted would be a smart house of the future. I wonder if I can put audio [00:03:00] on first? Probably. Can you hear that, Will? No, I can't, unfortunately. I'll tell you what he's doing. So they're here, right? They're predicting flat screens in 1989. And then the other thing they talk about, and this link is all on the Architecture Social, in Homes of the Future, how you can control with your voice the lighting, how you can control the temperature.
Stephen Drew: So it's true. Here we are, 30 years later. And it's called Amazon Alexa. That is the home of the future.
Will Ridgway: Yeah, they got that correct. Most of it correct, anyway. I
Stephen Drew: love his hairdo. What do you think,
Will Ridgway: Will?
Stephen Drew: It's not a mullet or an afro. Sorry, Will. Look at them abundance locks on there. Sorry, Will. There you go.
Stephen Drew: So if you want to check out the Homes of the Future, and you can see if it matches up with your house, check it out. That's in the news. I really like it. And I really it's got like that crystal maze effect. Have you ever been ill and you watch Crystal Maze and everyone's [00:04:00] Walking around in the, in the nineties, wearing this clothes.
Stephen Drew: It's a really, it's a really cool video. So check that out there, but we're going to jump straight into architecture.
Exploring the 'Never Too Small' YouTube Channel
---
Stephen Drew: And this is a channel that you recommended to me. And I thought it was really cool. Cause in the last few podcasts sorry, in the last few live shows we've gone to skyscrapers across the world.
Stephen Drew: And so I think it's nice to zoom in to a smaller scale. And so what we've got here is the channel never too small.
Will Ridgway: Yeah.
Stephen Drew: And it's beautiful already. Amazing graphic design, amazing. What's it called? Cinematography. Yes. And you can see here what this YouTube channel focuses on is actually smaller scale buildings and being really inventive with space.
Stephen Drew: You've got like them complex apartments in Japan, which are really tiny. Do you know what I'm saying? And there's been really innovative with the space. And they're actually really beautiful. And I think it's fun. [00:05:00] Look at this. It's so good. I know. Oh, there's a
Will Ridgway: man in the cupboard.
Stephen Drew: Do you think you go into the flat and someone's opens the cupboard and goes, keep it down.
Stephen Drew: And you're like, Jeff, sorry,
Will Ridgway: Jeff. No, yeah. It's I love the sort of the small spaces. I don't know what it would be like to live in it, but it always looks really cool to see. I'm really excited to see how much stuff you can fit in such a small area and it always fascinates me and I think it's important because as we get, as a lot of us live in the cities, where it's a lot smaller, maybe this is a way to create more space.
Will Ridgway: So yeah, I really like it.
Stephen Drew: And it makes me feel like my flat's a bit dull, Will. I need to get innovative with the cupboards and so forth. Yeah, maybe don't put a man in
Will Ridgway: the cupboard, but yeah.
Stephen Drew: No, no man in the cupboard. Yeah, that would be a bit controversial. You would see me on one of the, on the BBC news, you know what I'm saying?
Stephen Drew: Dr. Liz, all the links are on the Architectural Social in the industry news section. I will show that to you now, but you can check out this video as [00:06:00] well as a few others there. And we've got events. And we've got projects. We're going to do the badass building of the week, which is going to be more locally sourced projects and really good companies.
Stephen Drew: Rem, he's got his certificate. We're going to get the award over to him. But in the short term like we're going to look at other projects as well. So this is a beautiful channel. If you want to check out Never Too Small, they're on YouTube and me and will occasionally post on the Architecture Social our favorites from that channel.
Stephen Drew: Let's do one or two little bits of eye candy. Cause I quite enjoyed the videos and I think it's really good for the Architecture Social show. So I found here let's see, this is what I realized. So this is the. Ultimate. I think this is a candidate. So if I had like my soundboard working, it would be like the ultimate candidate for this is like ultimate background backdrop relaxing stuff.
Drone Footage and Cityscapes
---
Stephen Drew: So this channel, it's like a drone fanatic. His name is The Dronalist [00:07:00] and he literally can find all the best drone artists online and he will go and do a city. So it will be like New York and all this stuff. And he will literally. Put together like a journey through the city, yeah, and get all these amazing drone pieces.
Stephen Drew: So if you remember in the last week, we had New York in the traffic and it was like, yeah, it was like honking the horn, get out of the way. And now this is the other end where you're, we're in the sky. It's, and it's beautiful. And so I just thought since, We live in London, especially for us. It's nice to see different cities.
Stephen Drew: And what I'm going to do is try to find different drone stuff through just, I just different cities, different parts of the world. Look at the scale of New York though. It is absolutely bonkers. It's a very vertical city. And when you're on the streets, these blocks, right? They look smaller than they are.
Stephen Drew: Look at the footage of this. This is super eye candy, isn't it? It's just, I absolutely love it. [00:08:00] We've got, Oh, we've got a few messages coming in. Stephen, saying you're a bit late. Don't worry, Steve, we're just hanging out here. You come and go as you please. You get your coffee and your sandwiches.
Stephen Drew: That's the whole vibe here. Don't worry. And Irene, lovely to see you again. And thank you for the kind likes and subscribes and sharing students works. It's really cool. On that note, I've actually upgraded the Architecture Social website. So while we've got a bit of drone footage, can you head over on your screen to the blog section?
Stephen Drew: And we'll bring up Deanna's portfolio and I will go through that in a second. All right. This is perfect. Clicking away. So all I got to do is go back to this drone footage. Cause this is we need drone footage whenever we flub on this show in the background world. Cause look at it.
Stephen Drew: You can't even
Will Ridgway: be
Stephen Drew: annoyed.
Will Ridgway: I know. I get to see it. Sit and just watch it all the time. I've never been to New York as well. So it's just nice to see things from a different perspective as well.
Stephen Drew: Put it this way. When I went traveling in New York, I was in an Airbnb with three crackheads outside at 6 a.
Stephen Drew: m. in the [00:09:00] morning. So this is a very like romantic notion of New York, but it is very nice. And yeah. It's definitely one to go for, but the one last thing I would say about New York before we move on, is that I thought as a Londoner, people say it's a fast moving city. Don't worry about it.
Stephen Drew: Sorry. It's a fast moving city, get it ready. And I was like, no, I'm a Londoner, I'm used to it. And I went there, Will, and it was super disorientating. And I thought I was like Hugh Grant that everyone was going to fall in love with. And, Everyone was like, get out of the way, you crazy man.
Stephen Drew: Do you know what I mean? Like almost getting run over on the road and jaywalking. You can't jaywalk and all this stuff. So you gotta be, you gotta be really careful, but yeah, that's great. So here we go. Got all that now. Really good. There we go. Let's get Dr. Les out. I thought my phone was going well, but it's still attached to the arm.
Stephen Drew: Look, so I've got to bring it. I've got to bring it. If I need to put someone on me, I've got to do it like that now. Oh, it fell on the floor. It fell on the floor. Oh, nice. There we go. Dr. Les, really good experience. [00:10:00] Bit over in New York. You can't always appreciate from the ground. I totally agree.
Stephen Drew: All right so let's go.
Showcasing Student Projects on Architecture Social
---
Stephen Drew: So this is the blog section on the external, oh, there's me external website. So it's probably worth saying that on the Architecture Social, the heart is the community, but what I like to do is try and showcase projects from within the community, Out. So the external website on architecture social.com, and this is actually the blog, which is architecture social.com/blog.
Stephen Drew: I'm gonna try and post different stuff. So we've got, oh yeah, we've got Dr. Liz. This quick, quickly click on Dr. Liz and make a bright red when she's watching. I absolutely had an amazing chat with Dr. Liz. I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation and for instance, if you are a member of the architecture social.
Stephen Drew: It's on there, but you can access it on Spotify and everything. And so we've got a lovely picture of Dr. Liz and her dog. I think the name's Lutchins. And yeah, it was just really good conversation. [00:11:00] So check that out while you're there. But let's move back out one sec. We'll go back and I want to show everyone.
Stephen Drew: I want to show everyone. So if we go Peckham's Agora by Diane at the top there. Yeah, perfect, mate. So what I've upgraded now, and you can check this out in the blog section is so the students work, so all GDPR compliant. There you go. Just before being pressed with me. So you can see Diane. As uploaded A PDF here.
Stephen Drew: 'cause we've gotta help the students in difficult times and this is a great project and so I've managed to get this one here. I've gotta get rid of the effect in the middle will which kind of creases the page 'cause it's oh yeah, I'll get rid of, I'll work it out. But basically. I think it's a really nice way.
Stephen Drew: You can see her project as well, and we've got the pictures below. So it's all loads there. I just think it's a really nice way of showcasing your work. And so you can submit your work to the Architecture Social to upload your work. So if it's okay if you go to the top, mate, I'm just going to show people how to do that.
Stephen Drew: Yeah. So if they want to submit their work, go to [00:12:00] showcase. Yeah. And then submit a project. Now that's a go on the. Go back up. Here we go. Submit a project. Yeah. And so you would just use this form, fill it out, and it sends the work. And there you go. If you're an academic or professional. So if you're a professional, you would register your company profile.
Stephen Drew: Stop racing ahead. Go back. I'm sorry. If you're a student. Oh, you're breaking my website.
Will Ridgway: Just. Just I thought you should have designed it a little bit better, but yeah, anyway,
Stephen Drew: excuse me.
Will Ridgway: Anyway, let's go back. I'm backing up. Academic. Academic.
Stephen Drew: Yeah. Yeah. And then you'd upload your work, your name, you put the details in, which way, and you send across your work.
Stephen Drew: It's really easy. If you take your time, and don't break my website, we'll you're like a really good tester. I'm gonna get you to test my website. That's what you would do. So you would do that, and then we can showcase your work as well. But I [00:13:00] will give I will give priority to people in the Architecture Social, over people.
Stephen Drew: We're not signed up, so sign up to the community as well. There you go, Dr. Liz, you were right. That is Ewan Lutyens and it was really good podcast. So thank you, Will, for going through that. And that was
Will Ridgway: really easy. I was just a little bit difficult.
Stephen Drew: You did really well. Don't be critical of yourself.
Stephen Drew: So there we go. I'm just gonna I'm just gonna go and we are gonna load up something different. So this one's, I've got a few different ones here. So we've got, we've, we covered this. Let me like that so I know which ones I've done. We've covered this and I've got a few other ones as well. So something a bit different.
Stephen Drew: Okay.
Minecraft and Architectural Solutions
---
Stephen Drew: Which I thought as some of us on the social myself, mainly a game of geeks. I thought that this was a really cool concept video and so well. This is a guide screen building design, okay, by someone who's talks about the problems and talks about solutions, [00:14:00] but the way he's illustrated the projects and the proposals and how to solve the greenhouse effect using architectural solutions is in Minecraft, which is quite cool.
Stephen Drew: So you can see here, he's setting the scene now, but what I liked about this channel. Is that, yeah, this is these, this is the world. This is London in Minecraft is electrical systems in Minecraft. I can't even on Minecraft, do the basic stuff, right? I'm just like, I'm the guy cutting down the tree.
Stephen Drew: And I just thought this was a really fantastic way. Is this on Minecraft? I can't even tell anymore. This one doesn't work. So check this video out and you will see, and I think the thing is when you're doing it, it is audio over it. So it illustrates the real world. This is a beautiful project.
Stephen Drew: This is one of the, this is in real life. This is one of the episodes. Yeah, that's definitely not Minecraft. That's definitely not Minecraft. Yeah. But check out this. It goes through everything as well. And let me just find a little [00:15:00] bit more of a Minecrafty bit. But I liked some of the examples in it. So there we go.
Stephen Drew: You got a bit of Minecraft, check it out. It talks about active design, talks about Minecraft. I think it's just nice to do something a bit different. Kids creating fantastic Minecraft buildings might be the architects of the future. Absolutely. I used to down, I used to play Sim City. That was what I used to do.
Stephen Drew: And that was one of the reasons I wanted to become an architect as well as the Sims and the original Sims. I would design my building, but then, the Sims went in a bit of a different direction. Still architecture ish, but then it was more about pets and Halloween and the social aspects.
Will Ridgway: I was always pretty bad at designing houses, which is one of the reasons why I didn't become an architect.
Stephen Drew: Oh really? I was just pretty bad.
Will Ridgway: I just make a little box.
Stephen Drew: You're having you're having an You, you're having a positive effect, mate, probably worth mentioning on that. We, cause this is supposed to be a January review.
Stephen Drew: Sorry I haven't reviewed January yet at all, and it's been quite positive. Me and Will have been super, [00:16:00] super busy and I absolutely. It's actually been one of our strongest months in the last few years. Will's back full time from furlough. We've had roles. We just, we might have another offer pending today.
Stephen Drew: It's so good. I've actually had a contract to go back for the first time in three months, so really amazing stuff. And we will talk about a job in a second, but right, this is the funniest video I've seen for a while, Will. Okay, this is the one I enjoyed. So this is really cool. I did like it.
Stephen Drew: It is good. I just felt like it was so beautiful. I felt like whoever did this video, he was enjoying himself and I think he fancied himself as Steven Spielberg, right? Because when you've got the music there, it's brooding. Look, people are in, staring. This guy's lost by the pool. He's What's happening in life, more wandering, your million pound mansion, confused.
Stephen Drew: But it's beautiful though, isn't it? Look at that. It's the top of the [00:17:00] mountain. It's like the Thunderbirds headquarters. You remember that? Just the rocket out of the ground. Yeah, the pool just opens up,
Will Ridgway: it's two, and he has his car, his driveway for his car to come in and out of.
Stephen Drew: Yeah, look, it's like James Bond, isn't it?
Stephen Drew: Yeah, it is so cool. Yeah, there you go, look, people just wandering back and forth, lost. They're not talking to each other. She's there, going in the sun. He's halfway by the rock, do you know what I mean? It's like, where did I put,
Will Ridgway: where did I put the pool? It's so big that they can't
Stephen Drew: find each other.
Stephen Drew: Yeah, that's a cool view. That is a cool view. That's a cool view. Barefoot. Can I hurt that, Ace? Yeah. We've got a few comments here as well. DrLiz is glad we're busy. Thank you, DrLiz. Oh, I like the interiors in the background as well. Engineers love Meccano. I used to have Meccano as well. There you go.
Will Ridgway: What's he doing?
Will Ridgway: He should be playing on the stairs, that's what my parents always told me when I was younger.
Stephen Drew: But I like his playful. [00:18:00] You get what I mean? It's funny. It's like he's haunted. Maybe he's a ghost for part of the millionaire mansion. You're like, oh, it's just Jeff knocking around. He comes with the I do the interiors on it, I do.
Stephen Drew: Yeah, it's really cool. Here we go. This could be like, this is the outfit, look. She's gone. She's just gone. Oh no, there she goes. She's just gone. You were there a second ago, now you're gone. It's not there now. Yes, she's I'm on the fourth floor. What a beautiful building. And I actually do like the video, but I like having a bit of a, you can have a giggle about these things and it's nice.
Stephen Drew: It's better than any video I've done. Put it that way. That's one that I thought I would show and we can mix it up and we'll do one or two things a bit different is the.
Touring Luxury Properties
---
Stephen Drew: This one is an interesting YouTube channel, which I binged on the weekend. So you have these, they're like cool YouTubers, but what they do is that they're a couple, they're quite I feel like they're quite [00:19:00] genuine.
Stephen Drew: I quite like them actually. And they go around all these properties in London, the UK and Birmingham, all stuff. across the UK, not just London. And they talk about, they go see architectural projects and they have a tour. So this is a 3 million pound architectural project by, I think, David Sheppard, it just popped up there, 6.
Stephen Drew: 5 acres. It's really cool. And basically I'm going to skip a little bit throughout it. All of this is on the Architecture Social as well, but you can see in a kind of a real way without too much polish. They literally there with a camera. They go through these beautiful buildings and also not just like the most amazing, beautiful buildings, but houses for 500 grand, 750 grand, 300, 000 pounds.
Stephen Drew: So you really get a nice range of stuff. This one's a little bit more architectural focused. And I just think it was a really cool building, so I like the fact that it was not fully part. It's like they've well done it, but you [00:20:00] get the impression like you're going along with them into the house and you're talking about him.
Will Ridgway: Obviously, yeah,
Stephen Drew: they're not slagging it off because they want the agents to invite them into the next building, but they're quite objective considering. So I quite like that. I thought it was a really good example. So well, while this loads here.
Discussing the Architecture Social Job Page
---
Stephen Drew: On your screen, can we go on the directory of the Architecture Social and then the job page and we can bring up our colleague Stephen's role, the Project Manager role.
Stephen Drew: We'll talk about that, which would be the job of the week. I quite like this, you browsing it's a bit of eye candy. It takes the pressure off us, doesn't it?
Will Ridgway: Yeah, I could do some of the work instead of you having to do it
Stephen Drew: all. Yeah, helps me out. So let's go to Architecturalsocial.
Stephen Drew: com forward slash job.
Highlighting the Project Manager Role
---
Stephen Drew: So this is on the outside part of the website and basically we always post them inside the website as well, but let's talk about this role. So this role, and I hope I'm doing Stephen Grant's justice. You can contact you can apply for it here. See the apply [00:21:00] button in the top right?
Stephen Drew: It's a bit, I'm going to change the dark thing, but you get it. And I'll put another button down there. But basically if you apply for this role basically this role is a design project manager.
Exploring the Design Consultancy Role
---
Stephen Drew: It's quite interesting because it's not quite a client side role, but it's a bit different. It's a little bit, it's not a traditional architecture role, but you get to be as a consultant on a On some of the most amazing projects.
Stephen Drew: They've won a huge scheme. They've they work in with a large social media company. They're kitting out all their offices. They're doing all this really cool and quirky stuff. So for anyone. That fancy is a job, which is a little bit away from mainstream architecture, but you still do your design skills.
Stephen Drew: So you're a consultant, you're doing all this stuff. And if you've got resi or commercial background, or you've done any high end hotels, that's going to go in your favor because this kind of like design consultancy, I think that's what you'd call it. It's a consultancy. Yeah,
Will Ridgway: it's a design consultancy slash practice.
Will Ridgway: You're right.
Stephen Drew: Yeah, so they work on a [00:22:00] range of different sectors. So if you're, you fancy a bit of a change and you come from a design background and you fancy consulting on projects, the salary is going to be around 50 to 60 grand and it's based near Twickenham. So check it out. You can find that link out as well.
Stephen Drew: It's the top job on Architecture Social. Dot com slash jobs, and that's job of the week now. All right, we'll, yes, we'll powering through this. It's starting to feel, yeah, I know. Professional, isn't it? We're gonna, while we do that, what I'm gonna do is I'll get a bit of eye candy here now, so we go back to the house as well.
Showcasing the Badass Project of the Week
---
Stephen Drew: Yeah, my friend, if you load up the projects, we'll do the badass project of the week, so go to the directory with the job sale, and then go to projects. We've currently got this lovely lady film clicking around the buttons in the house. There you go. Nice staircase though, isn't it?
Will Ridgway: It is a nice staircase.
Stephen Drew: Okay.
Will Ridgway: It's quite a roomy place [00:23:00] to be in. Is it a house? It's a
Stephen Drew: house. Yeah, it's like a juggernaut of a house. So on part of the Architecture Social, we're now on the Bowerbird framework, which means that if people submit their projects to Bowerbird or they can do that submit price that you broke earlier, Will, because I need to develop it more you can submit your work and we'll showcase it on the Architecture Social.
Stephen Drew: We'll showcase it here. Let's bring up one or two and we're going to have a bit of fun every week. We'll talk about the building we like the most. You can start off with your favorite. I think it's a greenhouse.
Introducing FAB Architects and The Greenhouse Project
---
Stephen Drew: So if you can click on one of the images and you can bring it up and I'll talk about it as well, but, so this is by a really cool architectural practice.
Stephen Drew: Dr. Les, you're going to be really happy with me. It's not a London centric practice. It's they're called FAB Architects. Let me read about them. I'll read about, so FAB Architects, they were founded in 2017. FAB Architects is an [00:24:00] award winning RIBA charted architectural practice run by Will Fisher and Mike Bell, okay?
Stephen Drew: They're really good, they're in Brighton. And so this project is called The Greenhouse. So let me read it out, Will. The brief was part practical and part creative to add space and function, but a vibrant, inspiring space at the same time. Our clients wanted something exciting, which is a fantastic starting point for any project.
Stephen Drew: The real magic of this project is how hidden the way it is from the street of an unassuming Croydon based terrace house, But as soon as you enter, you realize the back of the house is completely unlike anything else in the street. It's a real Narnia moment. And I think it is really cool, isn't it? So
Will Ridgway: I love the other way it looks inside.
Will Ridgway: It's just, everything flows quite nicely together. I don't know. It just fits together.
Stephen Drew: I think it's great. What are you guys in the audience think? Do say hello. You can interact here. You can say, Stephen, what are you doing? Oh you clicked in too fast, or you can go great job guys. No, I
Will Ridgway: don't know.
Will Ridgway: [00:25:00] I
Stephen Drew: think you're all right. I'm being, I'm teasing. Curves are always good in architecture. Curves are seen as feminine where straight lines are seen as mate. As male. Yeah, I quite like the curves in it. I feel like it was quite playful. And so if we click on the main page so if we come back out of the pictures, so you can see what I've done is I've started listing some details so we can see who the photographer is.
Stephen Drew: So go on the bottom right, details. Yes, I see. Project size 40 meter squares, project budget 120, 000 and completed in 2019. Very cool. So that's candidate number one. Okay. In the red corner. Okay. We got the greenhouse. Now I like Dufferin. Laneway Suite. So this is number two. Okay. All right. Let me read it out while you bring it.
Stephen Drew: So you get the eye candy up well. We're doing all right here, aren't we? It's just Yeah, good multitasking. Yeah, I know. It says me now and I've just crashed the sheet. Okay. All right. So this is [00:26:00] this is in Canada, Toronto. Okay, and so this is the Dufferin Lane Suite, which is a two bed, secondary living suite unit in the backyard of this Toronto property.
Stephen Drew: The Dufferin Laneway House is a new form of housing in our city, which celebrates the minimalist living and encourages higher density. All the spaces in this dwelling have a function where nothing goes to waste, the design addresses challenges, such as tight footprint. Accessibility. Here we go. Great.
Stephen Drew: Sophia says we were clicking too fast. Ah, no,
Will Ridgway: I was clicking too fast.
Stephen Drew: All right. So we're going to do a new rule. We're going to keep five seconds on an image, then go. So you had to think five seconds. One, two, three, four, five. And then I'll do a.
Will Ridgway: I think it's important also to [00:27:00] let everyone know that you can also look at this yourself if you look on the projects. Directory. Oh yeah,
Stephen Drew: let me put a link as well. I've got your back. I've got your back so you can find all of these on and also it can do either directory or you can go forward slash projects.
Stephen Drew: I think that will take you there as well. Okay, so I'll test that, actually live now, let's see, so you can find all that. So we've got the greenhouse, maybe bring up the greenhouse really quickly for the lovely Sophia.
Will Ridgway: Yes, let's go back to the greenhouse. Greenhouse.
Stephen Drew: Okay, so you've got my Dufferin Laneway Suite, or you've got the fantastical Greenway House.
Stephen Drew: You're clicking everywhere. I know. Stop clicking! Guys, give him a break, he's trying really hard, he's really good. My hands are off
Will Ridgway: the mouse.
Voting for the Badass Building Award
---
Stephen Drew: Okay, so the Badass Building Award of the week, and Dr [00:28:00] Liz has done a graphic for it. So guys in the audience, are we voting on the greenhouse or are we voting on Dufferin Mainway Sweep?
Stephen Drew: Stop moving, Will. I'm sorry, I keep forgetting my screen's being shared. I'm just looking through it myself. Yeah, don't worry, you're cool. All right, Drew was quick to judge. All right, Sophia. So I'm voting for oh,
Will Ridgway: I'm voting for greenhouse.
Stephen Drew: I feel like the greenhouse is cool. They're both pretty cool.
Stephen Drew: They're both pretty cool. All right. I'm going to let you guys put a few comments in and we will decide in five minutes the next surely anything that imaginative in Croydon should win. If I said that about a Wales Dr. Liz, I think you'd go out of bounds, you know what I'm saying? All right. But fantastic.
Stephen Drew: Okay. Bye. I'm going to go to my screen.
Will Ridgway: It's probably wise.
Stephen Drew: I'm going to go to my screen. You [00:29:00] say that I'm about to click around like a madman as well, isn't it? So in the architectural social, so in the community bin, you can see that also I link everywhere to the architecture projects that we talked about.
Stephen Drew: So you can do it from here. If you don't want to go on the external website and you can find the links there. Okay, you can do that and you can see all the projects there, but Will has kindly added one or two events that he's found online.
Upcoming Events and Webinars
---
Stephen Drew: Let's talk about them now, Will. The first one that you've got here is a webinar of future housing.
Stephen Drew: Future housing, how will housing be designed post Corona? In a webinar hosted by you and Studio, we explore this big question. The link's here on the Architecture Social community. If you're not signed up, let me put the banner, you can do it here. Okay. So check that out. That's completely free on the 4th of February.
Stephen Drew: Amazing. The next one you put and tell me if you're happy for me to talk about it. You can jump in if you want. Oop. [00:30:00] I
Will Ridgway: mean, it's Yeah. So it's the both that previous one, this one are free. You do have to register to to obviously reserve a place. This one's on the 3rd of February. So that's next week on Wednesday 7, 5 30 to 7 PM.
Will Ridgway: So it's an hour and a half, I think. Yeah, that's got my, that's got my maths correct. But yeah, so it's talking about the importance of interior design in 2021, really. Yeah,
Stephen Drew: I think it's really good. And this one's quite interesting because we got, Oh, I clicked the wrong bit again. So you've got Simon Alford, who's going to be he's RIBA president elect, isn't he?
Stephen Drew: So he's going to be RIBA president next year. So for 3. 83, gosh, that's awfully specific or 5. 98. Yeah. I'm not
Will Ridgway: sure where the variation occurs. I imagine if
Stephen Drew: you're a student or, something, it's a bit cheaper, but the stage Architecture with Simon Alford. If you want to hear it straight from the horse's mouth, who's going to be directing RIBA, you can attend the event, which is by the Architecture Center.
Stephen Drew: So really good stuff. I [00:31:00] need to keep mentioning, cause it's a really good blog. So shout out if you're listening, ARCHITEAM they list lots of events. I will do it. And we will get there, Will. But I just think for now, actually, us organizing things on the Architecture Social, in the Architecture Social show, has been really helpful.
Stephen Drew: Irene votes for the greenhouse. I think that's three people that voted for the greenhouse. I do think, Will, that the greenhouse And we'll go click one to the top. Oh, sorry. Yes, that's me. Is the winner. So the badass award of the week goes to The Greenhouse.
Stephen Drew: Dr. Liz has done a brilliant graphic. So Dr. Liz maybe we'll do it for next week. What I think we should do Is have a graphic that I bring up on the screen. And then what we'll do is we'll send Fab Architects a picture and we'll certify it. Or maybe I can put Dr. Liz's badge on the [00:32:00] website.
Stephen Drew: We'll say the badass certify. Yes. I like that. Yeah. So we've got a little, we got a little we've got a little badge there as well. All right. So we've covered events. We've covered a few videos. We've covered badass buildings. We've mentioned Diana's Dr. Liz really likes the green house. Don't worry, it's one Dr.
Stephen Drew: Liz. So I think, all in all, we've covered a lot here. Maybe what we'll do, For the next 5 minutes, 10 minutes, we'll have a look at one or two videos and anything else pops to mind. So I think this has been a really cool way for everyone to look at the website. And as well, the Architecture Social now, I think it's getting a bit more mature.
Stephen Drew: There's definitely a lot of good content. We've got one or two awesome blog posts coming up as well. But let's have a little look at some eye candy. Here we go. What? Is this one that I posted? I can't remember. You need to change
Will Ridgway: the sharing of the screen. Oh yeah,
Stephen Drew: that helps, doesn't it? [00:33:00] I thought this was a really nice townhouse.
Stephen Drew: So remember last year, last, we had the burger one last, yes, we had the burger one. Which was a black square. And I didn't see a burger in it, but now I've gone for a white square. It's the thing that's in channel.
Will Ridgway: Is there a burger? No.
Stephen Drew: Oh yeah. Do you want to have a little look at the words, Will, while we get there?
Will Ridgway: I will have a look at the words. Let's find
Stephen Drew: these words. The words. But how is everyone this week in the audience? I hope everyone's feeling a bit better. Better January, while we're loading that up, I did say we would do a January look back in the review.
Reflecting on January and Industry Optimism
---
Stephen Drew: I think it the words I would say is that it's definitely a bit more positive from my perspective in terms of architectural recruitment.
Stephen Drew: There's definitely a lot more jobs in there. We have jobs on there. I'm hearing people go back to work, which is great. You do obviously still have to be quite competitive. You do need to make sure. Your portfolio and your CV is really tip top. You do need to stand out, but there is a fight in chance. Will is not on furlough anymore.
Stephen Drew: I'm not on furlough [00:34:00] anymore. And that generally means the market's doing quite well. So I would say that things are looking optimistic. We're not a political channel, but you can't help with stuff like Donald Trump going and all this stuff. I generally think that. Hey, things can only get better. Do you know what I mean?
Stephen Drew: So I think we're going the right way. I think that a little bit less craziness in the world, hopefully Joe Biden and everything like that is going to have a bit of stability going on as well. And I feel like we're getting there a little bit with the pandemic in terms of the vaccines. I think that the general consensus in terms of the industry.
Stephen Drew: is that we have to push on, we have to build, we have to keep doing stuff. And we touched upon it briefly where, oh, and I've got an interesting video actually, which is timely.
Future of Office Spaces Post-Pandemic
---
Stephen Drew: So we will I want to show you this because I thought it was good news. So it is on Dezeen and there's a video by TP Bennett.
Stephen Drew: Okay. Let me scroll down because I've got so much stuff here. Here we go. Video for TP Bennett. They're talking [00:35:00] about carving up and changing this beautiful office building. There we go. Dezeen. So basically, how the offices of the future, so offices are still being built, things we're not stopping now.
Stephen Drew: It's more about now, how that space is used. How is it going to be flexible working of the future? Are we going to be, Working at home. Are we going to be working three days a week at home, two days a week in the office, three days a week in the office? What is it going to be like? So this was a really cool video where when you listen to the audio, you talk about them, how they bearing in mind, everything that's gone on, how are they making these beautiful offices flexible?
Stephen Drew: How are they going to make it for some way that you can. Post pandemic, how you can work. So I think, and that's a really interesting talking point in January and going to Feb, it's going to be how the offices of the features are now. And I think actually me and Dr. Liz touched upon it briefly, podcast episode where she says, [00:36:00] material is going to be anodized.
Stephen Drew: It's going to be a much more of a check in, check out system. I think it's going to be, very interesting how the offices of the future are little tidbit. Dr. Lisa said the greenhouse was long listed for in the 2019 awards for in house interior category and was later selected as the reader's choice.
Stephen Drew: Wow. It's now the certified badass building, which I don't know. Yeah, this design might be a big thing and all, but hey, our office will be interesting as well. Here we go. Perhaps if contract has been appointed already, planning commission has been given to cities and offices, they have to go ahead and build, but they are remodeling interior.
Stephen Drew: Exactly. And that's the video talks about overcoming the problems because the show goes on. I don't know what the bee man was doing there, but you've got a few bees on the roof as well. I think it's an environmentally friendly proposal. Yeah. I think it's like the largest green wall in Manchester, which is pretty cool.
Stephen Drew: Check that out as well. Okay, I feel like we're there or thereabouts.
Wrapping Up and Final Thoughts
---
Stephen Drew: [00:37:00] I feel like this has been a good show. Again, little roundup just before we go. All the links for this week are in the Architecture Social. Now more than ever, if you want to be part of it, then do go to the Architecture Social and sign up as well.
Stephen Drew: If you want to submit projects to be talked about, On here, put it in this category, Industry, News, Insights, and Cool Stuff. Okay, I will check the settings. I'm pretty sure all members can contribute. Okay, so if you post a video, Dr. Liz, I'm really sorry. You posted one or two things on my LinkedIn and I forgot to do it.
Stephen Drew: But what I will do is I will post Dr. Liz's news in here and then in future, because she's really awesome at contributing stuff as well. What I'll do is we'll read out stuff like this, but over time, the more and more projects we can get by architectural practices, which are available on the on the architecture social I really want to [00:38:00] showcase local architectural practices work as well.
Stephen Drew: I do agree with Dr. Liz and that we shouldn't be. All London centric, we should do London as well as everything else. So I really want to showcase architectural practices work. And as well as that, like Deanne's portfolio, now we can do portfolio as well. We can see here, you've got the, on the outside website, the benefit is we'll share everything.
Stephen Drew: inside the architectural social community, but we will broadcast the work that is within the community proudly to everyone else. So Deanne is looking for a job, part one job. If you're an employer, check out her work. Half speed. Speedy Gonzalez. You can see her stuff here as well.
Stephen Drew: All right. Amazing. Thank you so much, everyone. And I hope this has been helpful. Drop me a message. Let me know if you like this. And the soundboard will be working next week. The the, they actually had a bug. I'm going to pull you off the screen soon. [00:39:00] You move too fast. Look at me. There we go. So we go like this.
Stephen Drew: You're actually awesome. It's very difficult up here being live guys. So I hope we were helpful. You are amazing. I'm going to put you in half speed next time. Thank you so much, everyone. Thank you very much.
Will Ridgway: Oh,
Stephen Drew: Dr. Liz loves the portfolios, and Will, I haven't got the music, but Will, we need your Weekly Words of Wisdom.
Will Ridgway: Oh, my Weekly Words of Wisdom, the thing I enjoy
Stephen Drew: most every time, Are you being sarcastic? No,
Will Ridgway: I, I, it's just because I said you were cooking too fast. I'm sorry. My weekly, a weekly words of wisdom is to slow down and things, oh no.
Will Ridgway: Things at a more comfortable pace for everyone. I feel that now. No. are
Stephen Drew: you feeling? Do you know what my [00:40:00] soundboard is not here, but if I could, I would put like a, either like a wow noise or like a love heart noise or something, but I tell you what, oh, we've got here as well. We've got a few different memes and stuff as well, haven't we?
Stephen Drew: Oh, by the way, I did this one for you. So this is as a boss, sometimes I say stuff, which a little bit can be a little bit frustrating. I put this one, so I roll.
Will Ridgway: Yeah, thank goodness I'm not in the office anymore. So you don't get to see that anymore from me. That's what I'm always doing on the phone.
Will Ridgway: I'm like, oh, OK, here he is again, calling me.
Stephen Drew: Yeah, this is it. All I'm going to be back with more stuff next week. Thank you so much, everyone in the crowd. All right. I'll sign that. I'll leave it there. Thank you so much, everyone. And we will see you next time. Next week, I'm sure. And hopefully we'll have amazing February.
Stephen Drew: Huh? I hope so. Certainly. Wow. Will, look, hang on one second. Will, before we go.
Will Ridgway: Yeah.
Stephen Drew: I'll be your beard. Are we going to grow it a bit [00:41:00]
Will Ridgway: further or what are we going to do? It was meant to come off two weeks ago.
Stephen Drew: It's impressive. The Amazon man's here. Thank you so much, Will. Keep your beard.
Stephen Drew: I want to see it next week. And thank you everyone for joining. It's been an absolute pleasure. Take care. Bye bye. Thank you, everyone. Bye bye.
