Introduction and Casual Banter
---

Will Ridgway: Hello, and welcome to the Architecture Social show. I'm Will Ridgway and I'm with Stephen Drew as always. How you doing?

Stephen Drew: Hey. All right. I'm good. I'm good. We were just almost delayed because Will kindly pointed out it was one o'clock and I was busy playing with my soundboard. That's a real battle though.

Stephen Drew: That's not actually Soundboard. That's a real, that's a real instrument alongside one or two other special surprises I've got, but Hey it's Wednesday. It's one o'clock. Let's roll on with the Architecture Social show.

Weekly Updates and Recruitment Talk
---

Stephen Drew: So there's always a few minutes for people, to log in, see it on LinkedIn for it to update.

Stephen Drew: Tell me before we jump in, what have you been up to? This week?

Will Ridgway: I've been up to, I've been very busy doing my job. Really? Basically. Oh yeah. Which is great. That helps,

Stephen Drew: isn't there?

Will Ridgway: Yeah, very busy with recruitment. So generally you generally focused on some of the roles that we mentioned last week.

Will Ridgway: Lots of interviews happening, so that's happy as well to [00:01:00] see more applications really for any technical architects really. Yeah. But yeah, in. That's what I've been doing. Leisure wise, it's a little bit difficult to, I don't know, I don't know, have some leisure time, if that makes sense, because

Will's New Exercise Machine
---

Stephen Drew: Show everyone your new exercise machine, Will.

Will Ridgway: I have.

Stephen Drew: Come on, we'll start with a bang, and then we'll do the news.

Will Ridgway: So this is I backed it in Kickstarter back in June, and it finally arrived last week on Friday. Basically, it's like a little exercise machine. Ooh! Do a live thing. Basically, I might just stand up, I'll be honest. So you can do like little bicep curls, that sort of thing, you can do chest press, but what's cool as well is that you can add resistance to it, like that, and then the resistance is like this.

Will Ridgway: Stronger. Wow. So I think it's really cool. Nice little, fun little toy for me to play with. The way I've been in lockdown,

Stephen Drew: you won't need resistance with me, I'll be on like number one. Do you know what [00:02:00] I'm saying? I like the, at the lower end, but okay, people are starting to come in, so that's amazing.

Stephen Drew: Thank you. I think maybe you should get me one of them, just saying, cause you never got me my birthday present. Stephen says, hi from Cold, Wet, Dorage. Hi, Stephen. Really good to have you with us. The Architecture Social Show. Here we go.

Architecture Social News Format
---

Stephen Drew: We'll crack it off with some news, but what I was going to say to you guys is we're doing a new way of basically doing this news.

Stephen Drew: Normally me and Will, we always have the news ready to go. And Will kindly sends me a Word document, which I'll use in the. Somehow managed to mess up and then I'm working off that. And now we're, it's all categorized. So if you go really quickly in the Architecture Social, all the links we will be talking about today, we're going to be posting in Industry News, Insights and Goods and cool stuff.

Stephen Drew: And if you're not a member already, you can join the community. Oh, it's not Architecture Social. That's the wrong link. Doesn't help well, does it? If I put the [00:03:00] wrong link. Wrong link, let me just change that. That's

Will Ridgway: what you call bad advertisement. Sending everyone to the wrong place.

Stephen Drew: Yeah, go to the correct link which is architectorsocial.

Stephen Drew: com forward slash join and you can go in there and you can have a little look at all the news and we've gone really to town. I've added some of my stuff, Will's added some of his stuff and we can play some really cool things. So I think this was roughly about where we were last week, Will, because I can see, it's one of the cool buildings.

Stephen Drew: I added the Mandalorian because that was one from before, and it's cool. But maybe we'll start with a bang and we'll bring up this project. So this is one that you posted. Let's see. Hopefully this works. Good. That's a good sign, isn't it? Always a good

Will Ridgway: sign.

Stephen Drew: Yeah. Here we go. Here we go. Will, tell us about it.

Tokyo's Tallest Skyscraper
---

Will Ridgway: So yeah, it's going to be I believe I don't know if it's Tokyo or Japan's tallest skyscraper. One of the two. But regardless, it's going to be pretty tall. I think it's about 390 meters in length, height wise. That's me [00:04:00] trying to remember, reading it. But basically, I know it has like a torch design to it.

Will Ridgway: So nice little tower, and then you've got a sort of torch at the top, almost, that's what it looks like. And the idea is it's going to have, yeah, you'll see the torch in a second as we finally make it all the way up to the top. Yeah. Oh yeah. So this is like the torch area. So it's a nice open space for people.

Will Ridgway: But there's also going to be the commercial offices. I think hotels are there as well. It's just a really cool design really nice looking.

Stephen Drew: Yeah the Taki Achi Project. What a cool name. And look. Do you know what? I miss traveling, so at least this is like a little bit of a kick. I love that we've got international projects.

Stephen Drew: I love that we talk about London projects, but also in the world, obviously. Do you know, remember Will, I was shooting around the world everywhere before the Pandemic, and I can't wait. I actually had a ticket to Japan. Which I'm still trying to get a refund for, but the airline, a bit like

Stephen Drew: Stephen, you can wait in the queue.

Stephen Drew: You can wait. We're [00:05:00] not going to refund you. How does that sound, Will? How does my

Will Ridgway: It works too well, unfortunately. K,

Stephen Drew: KLM Air

Stephen Drew: I demand my coupon! How about you?

Stephen Drew: Who do they think they are, Will? We're all suffering, do you know what I mean? I'm waiting for my refund. Unbelievable. Have you been to

Will Ridgway: Japan before, or was that going to be your first time? No,

Stephen Drew: it would be my first time. I'll tell you what it's like in two years, do you know what I mean, the way this is going.

Stephen Drew: Dr. Liz says hello, hi Dr. Liz, always a pleasure. Dr. Liz is now a moderator on the Architectural Social world, so you better be careful. I was going to, I'm going to get Dr. Liz to ban you, but absolutely, obviously love Dr. Liz. She's going to be coming in oh, a bit of an announcement we will be doing. Me and Liz will be Dr.

Stephen Drew: Liz. Sorry, Dr. Liz, called you Liz. We're going to be doing a podcast tonight. I'm going to record it. Hopefully we can get that out this week. Tokyo's torch is 390 meters, 1, [00:06:00] 200, 1, 280 feet high and 63 floors and will be Japan's tallest skyscraper when it's built. There you go, absolutely fantastic. Vanessa says hi.

Stephen Drew: Hey Vanessa, lovely to see you and welcome to the live stream. And Stephen is actually going, he is going there in 2022. Maybe I will see you there. Fantastic. I think what a great video to start with. The Tokyo Torch Tower, you can find that on the Architecture Social. In the Topics area, which is called again what did I call it?

Stephen Drew: I think it's Industry News.

Will Ridgway: Industry News and Cool Stuff, something like that.

Stephen Drew: Yeah, let's go for the next one. Blank Space Competition, is that a video? I fancy a video. It's not a video.

Will Ridgway: It's not a video. The next one is a video.

Stephen Drew: Okay. We'll come back to that. Oh, hang on. Let me put one of my videos on that I found.

Stephen Drew: Okay. So I want to do this one.

Future Cities and International Projects
---

Stephen Drew: Future. How do I say it? Ciel? Cell? Future Ciel? I don't know. Guys in the comments, correct [00:07:00] us. Dr. Liz, I need your help. I'm

Will Ridgway: so

Stephen Drew: uncultured.

Will Ridgway: I don't know.

Stephen Drew: Oh, I've got the description of this as well. So while this is playing, let me tell you the description. I love this channel. So this is all on YouTube.

Stephen Drew: I think it's future it's basically cities of the future. It's super, super cool. So 100 Arctic Shanghai. All right, let's bring it up. While that's rolling, enjoy the eye candy while I get the descriptions as well. Hope everyone's enjoying this this week. I hope it's been a little less stressful. What I would say while I'm doing this is that I do think that the architectural job market is picking up.

Stephen Drew: We have roles that we're working on. I can see stuff online, so I really hope that everyone is not struggling at the moment and they're okay. So j so Will, I've got so I've got, here we go. Descriptions come in. This proposal is the result of a creative international collaboration between a hundred architects, Carve and URIN, with the local [00:08:00] coordination and support of landscape architect, Walter Rio, with the purpose of improving the public spaces, the public facilities of the swimming pool in Jamsil, Hangan Park, the municipality of Seoul.

Stephen Drew: I think it's so there you go. Barney to the rescue. Barney, you need to be a regular here because we're doing international projects and I can barely speak English because I'm Welsh. So it helps us to, it helps to pronounce all this stuff correctly. What a great, what a really cool scheme. Look at them.

Stephen Drew: Oh, this is quite exciting stuff. But you know what, though? This is all previs, so I hope that the end lives up to it. Sometimes you look at these visualizations, and then you think oh, hang on, that's not what it comes out like.

Will Ridgway: Oh, we can't do that. Let's take that out.

Will Ridgway: Let's take that little pull out, for example. That looks so cool.

Stephen Drew: It looks so, so cool. The video is almost done. Come to an end so we let it run out naturally. Yeah. Oh, here we go. [00:09:00] We don't need to see the rolling credits. Look at that. It's like Star Wars or something at the end, isn't it?

Will Ridgway: Or any other credits on a film.

Stephen Drew: Yeah.

Will Ridgway: Yeah.

Stephen Drew: Yeah. Okay. I've got something humble, but we'll do yours first. So we're going to, we're going. We're really going all the way around the globe here. So we got Saudi Arabia and what I'm going to do is I'm going to, while this is loaded, I'm going to get the description on in another tab so that we're.

Stephen Drew: I can actually read it out as well. Holy moly. That was like a blast

Will Ridgway: there, wasn't it? It was. But yeah, this this is a project in Saudi Arabia that's just been announced, I think. Basically going to make a I a hundred mile long, a hundred mile long road, and then just going to be able to see across the entire hundred mile strip, which is Really out of this out of this country, out of this world.

Will Ridgway: It's

Stephen Drew: called, it's called The Line. The Line. I think I might have double put this also on Dizzee actually. It's called the line. Yeah, I think I've got it here. The line. [00:10:00] Have you talked

Will Ridgway: about this before?

Stephen Drew: No. This is going to be one I brought up. You got, Timmy, you got there first. You got there first.

Will Ridgway: Just too organized. But yeah, look at how long it's going to be. That's insane. They're just going to put that in

Stephen Drew: the middle of it. Okay, here we go. I've got a better description from Dezeen. Saudi Arabia to build a 170 kilometers long city as part of the NIM project. Saudi Arabia has got this long belt connected car free and artificial intelligent optimized communities called the line.

Stephen Drew: It's like a city line. So you just can you imagine you're going on a date and you're like, where are you? And you're like, Oh, I'm like, Oh, it's going to be a nightmare. You're going to have to get, I know it's insane. Barney's happy to help with my pronunciation. Thank you so much.

Stephen Drew: Barney. One or two have a shout. Is international, anything outside of London? Do you know what I, we do get a lot of do, when I was in Manchester for a while, I remember when I joined up there and I thought I [00:11:00] was from London, and they're like, oh, he's a Londoner. Do you know what I mean?

Stephen Drew: Because sometimes in London we do have that thing of this is an international project and London is the center of the world, so you're right, Dr. Liz. I need I, no, international is overseas and I will stop being so London centric. Next week,

Will Ridgway: yeah, next week we should get some projects that are outside of London, but within the UK.

Will Ridgway: Still, and just to satisfy that motive,

Stephen Drew: We're going to struggle if it's worse, because where I live is a little village called Punta de las. And in Punta de las, there's not much architecture to happen. The last big architecture in Punta de las was the the little roundabout that they built near the Tesco's that you can get into the Tesco's.

Stephen Drew: Let me go, Ponta Delas, I'll get you out, Ponta Delas, Tesco, Roundabout, and The Park. It really is just a, it's just a, it's really is something special. Here we go, I've got, actually got a picture of the Roundabout, so we'll put that on the live stream as it there. [00:12:00] There you go. Is that it?

Stephen Drew: Feast your eyes on the architecture in my village. I actually really like the village, but that's what we're talking about there. So we just talked about the line and Podadilis's Tesco's roundabout. You'd really do get it all. I've got one cool one, so I thought I'd throw up as well. Some cool bits, okay.

Stephen Drew: Now I've been looking on YouTube for some more videos that we can put in the Architectural Social show doing this.

Driving Through Downtown New York
---

Stephen Drew: And one of the ones I like was this guy who literally takes videos driving around cities. This is what he does. And it's actually so cool. So this is what it's like driving in downtown New York.

Stephen Drew: It's a really good background thing because you know everyone, when you go around their house, they load up Netflix and they put on their like [00:13:00] fireplace. thing and they put it on there. I thought this was really cool. So I had it on the background the other day and it was really interesting. If you turn the sounds on, you can hear all the hustle and bustle and this chap literally records going around the city.

Stephen Drew: Right now we're stuck in traffic. So it's Hey, come on. But then we know when he, when you move around, you can basically see here from the thumbnail, he's literally going around. And I, and you know what? Cause I went to New York. It is like this. You've got to look, you've got all the yellow I say, does it drive at

Will Ridgway: all, or does it just stay stationary?

Stephen Drew: I think it was on like a bad street, but here we go. We've got a bit of, got a bit of movement. Come on, get past the red. Come on just go over the line. Come on, come

Stephen Drew: on. Get out

Will Ridgway: of the way! See, now that we can't travel around the world at the moment because of COVID, this is the next best thing, really.

Will Ridgway: We're just getting

Stephen Drew: road rage though. It's not good for me. Oh, you skipped that bit. I thought [00:14:00] he was there for a good five minutes and was like, I can't put that in. Do you know what I mean? There we go. Dr. Liz says this great architecture in Wales is perhaps not important to us. I think that's completely true.

Stephen Drew: Dr. Liz, challenge for us. Let's get some awesome Welsh architecture. Do you know what's the one I really like by Heatherwick as well? It's amazing. I think it's in Cardiff there the government building for Wales is beautiful by Heatherwick. So all jokes aside, I do love it. And Wilkinsonaires project in Wales.

Stephen Drew: They did the national I don't know if it's national. They've got like one of the heritage they got one of the heritage museums. And that was really cool. So you can go there and look in the miners. And my grandfather was a miner as well. My grandfather, he went to World War II. He went to Japan. He went to the coal mines.

Stephen Drew: He was also a lollipop man. Yeah, he did it all. He did it all. I love it. So let's move on. So let's go [00:15:00] next one. Let's see. Maybe we'll go to one of your things as well. So tell me, which one do you want to play, my friend? I don't think I've got any more videos, I'll be honest. I think

Will Ridgway: you've gone through all the videos.

Will Ridgway: I think I've only got articles.

Stephen Drew: I will go through this, so basically, I've got this one London centric. Sorry, Dr. Liz. Here we go.

Virtual Tour of Canary Wharf
---

Stephen Drew: So Clary Walk tour, walking tour. This is cool because I can actually go there and go for a walk. So on the NLA, which is the, which is a really great, normally like the NLA is, I think it's New London Architecture and they'll have, they have a build, a bit in the building centre in London.

Stephen Drew: And I think it's a really, I think it's a really great project great place, but now you can't actually do that. They've got a lot, you can't go there in person. They've got a really, they've got a, they've really kicked it up on their YouTube channel. So you've got this fantastic chap.

Stephen Drew: And I really enjoyed [00:16:00] it. It was the perfect thing on a Sunday to watch. This is, you can join on a virtual tour of Canary Wharf, led by Blue Badge guide, David Thompson. So you always go Blue Badge, treading across the modern landscape, built on 97 acres of historic docklands, explore the development stories, landmark sites, sitting at the heart of lively financial, residential and retail district.

Stephen Drew: Really cool. Canary Wharf. If you've never been there for anyone that's not in London, it's such a cool place. It's like its own like bubble because Canary Wharf and Canary Wharf Group manage it. And it's really fascinating to see the kind of ecosystem they build because what, 10, 20 years ago, it was all Docklands, right?

Stephen Drew: So I, I quite like it. When I remember when I first went there, you can get totally lost in all the shops in the underground bit, you know what I'm saying? Yeah, you can totally get lost. I've

Will Ridgway: not been there very much. So I've never had a reason to be over that side of London at all. Yeah. You can see it [00:17:00] from a distance.

Will Ridgway: And so I've seen it. Like the whole area, just not really being there, probably.

Stephen Drew: This is it. So you can totally go there now, Will, if you can just load up this virtual tour and you can say that you've been there with Blue Badge Peter over here. Do you know what I mean? I really enjoy that.

Stephen Drew: I think it's really good. You can also check out all that, all of these links as well. So let's bring it up is in the Architecture Social. If you're already part of it, great. If not, you can just click architecturesocial. com forward slash join. Let's have a few look at the comments here. Okay, here we go.

Stephen Drew: Wilkinson added the fantastic footbridge to the Gwendolyn Swansea and the National Waterfront Museum. I completely agree. Heatherwick is not an architect. I knew that Dr. Liz, I just meant he did good architecture. And I've upset Dr. Liz, but not the other way

Will Ridgway: around. Yeah, it looks like you're going to be the one getting banned from the Architects Association.

Will Ridgway: I think I

Stephen Drew: will be getting banned. Sorry, Dr. Liz, when you're on the [00:18:00] spotlight, it can get a bit difficult to get everything right, but yeah, Heatherwick's not an architect, but he did do. Which was the building I'm on about? Let me see, Heatherwick, Cardiff Plantfield, don't know. Gonna have to get back to you on that, but I really like some of his beautiful stuff.

Stephen Drew: Great, let's move on quickly. Okay, we're gonna go, we're gonna have our little Dr. Liz is not happy, Gavin, you're right. I gotta definitely do a little bit. I gotta do a little bit of backwards paddling over here. So let's see here. Next one.

Badass Building of the Week
---

Stephen Drew: Oh, let's have our building off. So let's do the badass building of the week.

Stephen Drew: All right. What's

Will Ridgway: yours

Stephen Drew: first?

Will Ridgway: I already know I've got one, but I don't know if you have one yet.

Stephen Drew: Okay. So we're going to bring up yours first. So we're going to, we're going to basically get your building first. Oh, I don't know what Dr. Liz is typing in the chat. I'm nervous to look right now. Let's load up.

Stephen Drew: Let's load up. It better not be a Heatherwick building, Will, because you [00:19:00] are an architect. This is a Heatherwick building! Dr. Lee, shield your eyes. Shield your eyes. I have a video. Let me find

Will Ridgway: the video. But basically, that's what it looks like from the outside. I love the colors of it, I'll be honest. Both obviously the green and also, I don't know what color that is, if it's like orange brown, but but Is this

Stephen Drew: you selling me the building in the building off?

Will Ridgway: I don't need to tell you, Edward can sell the building instead, but here's the video of it. I don't know, I just the way it just looks. See, it looks a different color there than it does in the other pictures. It's more of a brownie red there but it just looks really neat and tidy. I like the whole, flowers and leaves there, although I don't, I wouldn't be one that wants to water them every day

Stephen Drew: though.

Stephen Drew: This is true. There we go. Hardwork did the silver business, Harvest for Averages, Art Censor. Maybe that's it. And there's no mercy from Dr. Lez. The hand of doctor, the hand of doom from Dr. Lez. I tell you what, good thing we're not like [00:20:00] how do I say, one of these official university learning courses.

Stephen Drew: Cause. My, my architecture stuff, I, I've not, I know a few, I got my part one and my part two, right?

Introduction to the Debate
---

Stephen Drew: But okay. I'm a bit fake then these days on what Heatherwick's been up to. So let's move on.

Presenting the Heatherwick Building
---

Stephen Drew: So this is your one. So this is in the blue corner. So in the red corner, Oh gosh, let's see here.

Stephen Drew: Let's see

Will Ridgway: what you managed to bring up. I

Stephen Drew: hope, oh no, I've lost the sheet page as well. One sec, I'm scrolling. Oh no, I need to bring back the title, Badly Organized News, don't I Will? Okay, I've got to go to emergency and I don't even know the name of the building. So I'm typing OMA Tower, which looks like the T Rex swiped it.

Stephen Drew: Okay. Okay, alright, this is, I've got it, I've found it, I've found the name of it, Will.

Presenting the REM Building
---

Stephen Drew: So I'm going with REM, so you're going with [00:21:00] Heatherwick, and I'm going with REM. But REM is, oh I've got it here, this is like the coolest building ever. Okay, so let's, but then I'm a bit of a geek, so it's like the coolest building if you're a geek.

Stephen Drew: Okay, so let me bring up my one. We're gonna be bringing up Dezeen. So this is the one I picked from my candidate. This tower is a badass tower. It looks like King Kong and Godzilla scraped it. In the middle of the fight, and it's a completely cool building. Do you like

Will Ridgway: it? I do, I think I do recognize it, but you're quite right, it looks like someone's taken a swipe out of it.

Will Ridgway: But I don't know, I like the what is it a residence is it

Stephen Drew: offices there, residential? A bit of everything. So you've got the pub, you've got a hotel. You've got some offices, you've got everything, also Godzilla, you can watch him fight outside. You can get an apartment.

Will Ridgway: Look at that [00:22:00] apartment that's just like hanging over the edge.

Stephen Drew: I know, it's so cool. But anyways, that's my building.

Audience Interaction and Voting
---

Stephen Drew: Guys, in the chat we're going to scoop on. But let me know which building you prefer. If you prefer Will's Have A Wick building. That's not the best picture, Will. The best picture's the video, I'll be honest. Oh yeah, that's true. Or if you like my Godzilla building, so have a little vote.

Stephen Drew: Oh, look at this! Gavin saying, Google research, best research, that's a boss tower, reminds me of pixel tower in BKK built. There you go. Dr. Liz met Rem Koolhaas some years ago, so wins for me. Aha! I've won over Dr. Liz, I think.

Will Ridgway: You've finally made up.

Stephen Drew: Oh no, I've got the podcast tonight. I'm going to get destroyed in my own podcast, aren't I?

Stephen Drew: I actually love Dr. Laird. She's amazing. Really helpful. Really helpful to everyone in the Architecture [00:23:00] Social. Also, let's have a quick look in the chat. Jason Boyle is here. Jason's in the house. Hello, Jason. You should Jason's just setting up a YouTube channel. With me. We're taking over YouTube.

Stephen Drew: Check out Jason on his LinkedIn profile. I'm sure there will be a link there. Okay. BKK equals Bangkok. Will, how do you not know that? Actually, I didn't know that at all. BKK Bank. I thought it was the tower. B, k, K. See Gavin, you know what you are working with me? I'm like, anchor man. If you put something in front of me.

Stephen Drew: I'll just repeat what's there, it's dangerous, but so jumping back in. Okay, let's go. Let's go guys. We'll do one or two more videos here as well. I might have to mention Heatherwick in the podcast now, Dr. Liz, because it's an interesting thing, but yeah, he's not an architect. He never was an architect.

Stephen Drew: He does a lot of architects in the studio which is a misconception. Most people do think he's an architect. Okay.

Exploring Another Cool Building
---

Stephen Drew: So this is another video that I liked. The description is pretty interesting as well. [00:24:00] So this is another YouTube channel I found called The Design Emotive. And so this is an architect's home.

Stephen Drew: Okay. It's black. It's the kind of thing that I think is cool. It's, it's just a funky house. I quite like them. I look at that. This is some custom doors. That's how, it's not my house. I wouldn't have the patience to do that. I

Will Ridgway: think, yeah, look at that. You have to keep things organized.

Will Ridgway: I think when you have, when you're living in such a sort of close close proximity house, as in small house, that's the word. You need to be organized and that's something that I don't know, Steve,

Stephen Drew: I don't know. That in me. On the subject of getting organized, I am just literally getting the blurb now for it.

Stephen Drew: So this is a architect's house laid out like a hamburger. It don't look like a hamburger to me, it looks like a black cube. Okay, but it's laid out like a hamburger, so I'm guessing there's layers on there. You got one floor with lots of cheese in there. I don't understand how this is working. [00:25:00] But you don't really associate a hamburger with home design.

Stephen Drew: But for architects Jesse and Seda, this was the approach they took on a block measuring of 76 square me meter squared. It was split in half with three Bedroom Vertical Townhouses, which meant they couldn't go out, so they went up. From the outside, it's very striking, and this home takes flexibility to the next level with dining tables that come kitchen, benchtop, fold down.

Stephen Drew: I really love all that stuff, like versatility. In that everything. So I think it's really cool. I absolutely love it. Here we go. An Orwellian Hamburger. That's like a cool name for an album, like the Orwellian Hamburger or a band. You know what I mean? Yeah. You need to write that. You ever done that?

Stephen Drew: And you're like, that's a cool name. And then you just forget the next day. Write it down, Will. I'm gonna recruit Gavin in a bit. He can play the drums and the Wellian hamburgers. I think it's good, isn't it? It's a good thing. Okay, so I've [00:26:00] got one or two things. Jason says it's interesting. I agree. I quite like this.

Stephen Drew: So the only vote was from Dr. Liz, who likes Rem, she met Rem, and Heatherwick's not an architect. So I'm winning the fight right now, because Gavin, what are you, don't worry, whatever tower, Gavin, which one are you picking? I think he's, I think he's going to go with my tower. Do I win Gavin?

Stephen Drew: Let us know. You will be the deciding vote. Normally like Gavin's now gone. Do we'll get that going and here we go. Look at that. I need one of them. I'm not very organized. Oh, I'm going to get

Will Ridgway: fed up about having to move everything around all the time.

Stephen Drew: Yeah. Do you know, I'm getting some artwork for the wall soon.

Stephen Drew: Some architecture, social artwork. I'm going to be putting up. So we'll get that going as well. Other news while we're here guys. Oh, everyone's ringing me at the moment. There we go. I'll tell my dad I can call back later. Dad, if you're watching the live stream, I'll call you back in a bit. [00:27:00] Okay, let's go.

Upcoming Events and Community Activities
---

Stephen Drew: Let's go to the next bit. Quick events you can attend in your underwear. Wills, you brought up some events for the week, haven't you, my friend? So let's go to the events of the week. And here you can see live, here's the Architecture Social community. You can see all the community forums and everything.

Stephen Drew: There, Gavin's still here. Gavin, you are the decider, my friend, if Will's Heavyweight Building or OMA wins. In the short term which events can you attend in your underwear this week? So you've got here a panel discussion on that.

Will Ridgway: Yeah. So this one's basically talking about how art and design and also architecture as well using that to help create spaces to heal.

Will Ridgway: So basically the idea is for to help with mental health and sort of social health as well, and just creating spaces in that sense. And just as I talk about that, it's free, you have to register but it is free. I believe. Yeah, it's free. And it happens on the 27th next [00:28:00] week. Yeah, it's yeah, online.

Will Ridgway: You can send it in the underwear.

Stephen Drew: Jason, my fellow YouTuber rockstar, is now saying, oh, I may win. You're going for your Heatherwick. Dr. Liz is on my side, she knows a lot about building, she's a doctor. We got Jason, and I'm waiting to see what Gavin thinks, but I think so far, Wren wins.

Will Ridgway: Yeah, you have advantages, you come from an architecture background.

Will Ridgway: I just like pretty things.

Stephen Drew: Everyone likes a pretty thing, mate. Don't worry. So I'm not going to click in the next one, but you can see one or two events here. And I'm going to, we're going to list more and more events that we feel is cool. And if you're a member of the Architectural Social community, you can post an event.

Stephen Drew: And especially if it's to do with your practice, or if it's anything to do with a community you're involved with or an event you're running, post it there and I will shout it out. Next week. So I think we've got to cover the events. Oh, here we go. I appreciate the pod motif of Heatherwick, but overall, I found the [00:29:00] Rotate and Carve Tower more interesting as a break to the status quo than Stack Towers.

Will Ridgway: I lost. I better bring something better next week.

Stephen Drew: That is a hell of an answer. Dr. Liz is impressed. Oh, do you know what as well, Gavin, I think we're doing the podcast. I'm allowed to say that as well. So I'm going to be having Gavin on there as well. Gavin's got a channel called the Aussie BIM Guru. He knows a lot about BIM.

Stephen Drew: Gavin, either way, I'm just going to tell you. I'll be able to help you on the BIM talk in the podcast because I did. I am Revit certified as a beginner user from 2014, mate. So just saying . Just saying . Yeah. You never forget these things. Only joking. I'll load it up and I won't have a clue anymore. Do you know what I mean?

Stephen Drew: Okay. I think that's it really from us on the, on that front. So what I'm gonna do now is I'm gonna talk about one or two.

Job Opportunities in Architecture
---

Stephen Drew: Jobs of the [00:30:00] week. I should mention, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna steal the spot here, Will, and I'm gonna talk about a job that I'm working on, which is a BIM Manager job in London.

Stephen Drew: I hope that's cool. And we can talk about yours in a bit as well. So if you are currently looking for a job and if you're in BIM, Gavin, if you fancy coming to London, I have a job for you, my friend. So it helps if I actually posted the job on the job board. Oh, there you go. It is there. Head of BIM Manager in London, so it's an international practice, jargon incoming, there you go.

Stephen Drew: It's basically an international practice and their London office, they've been using the framework overseas. Okay, for BIM I wonder if Gavin's eyes are rolling here and stuff, I don't know what okay, but basically the London office has been using this framework, they got one or two BIM specialists in the office but they need a BIM manager really to come in and set the [00:31:00] lay of the land.

Stephen Drew: They really need all that. So let me look at my eye contacts. I've been told that I look down too much. So if you are that person, and if you are a BIM Manager in London, or you're like a super, super experienced BIM Coordinator, and you want to be a BIM Manager, or you've done a little bit of BIM Management.

Stephen Drew: Get in touch. The salary is around, I think it's going to come in about 60 to 70, 000 pounds. So I wonder if I can entice Gavin as well. Gavin's been kicking ass on YouTube and doing consultancy. If it all goes wrong, I can't find the person. I'll just say to the, just practice, just a friend, Gavin, he'll sort it out.

Stephen Drew: Got fast friends here, isn't it? This is what it's all about. This is what we're all about, and I don't think I did much jargon there, Gavin, you gotta let me off. Yeah, once the borders close, my business stops printing money, I'll consider it. Printing money? What are you doing? Can I come work for you?

Stephen Drew: What's he doing? I'm gonna look at this. Printing money? I'm downloading Revit. 2021 [00:32:00] version, only got a bit of seven years backlogging, and I'm going to be the annoying person that keeps asking Gavin loads of questions, but what I'll do is I'll get him on the podcast, and then I'll get his WhatsApp, and then at night I'll be like, So if you set up a file in this field, how do I get, and then just I'm going to get archived straight away.

Stephen Drew: I can see it now. So well, so what's your job of the week? So that's my BIM Manager role. You can apply for it on the Architecture Social. It's on the Architecture Social. If you go there and you go to directories, you can find the job. So I'll put the link to that as well while we talk. Oh, architecturesocial.

Stephen Drew: com forward slash jobs. That's pretty easy, isn't it? Your one, you've still got a few running on from last week. One or two of them are in interview stages, but there's also one or two that are still looking. So let's talk about the medium sized architectural practice, which is looking for job runners and technical architects.

Will Ridgway: Yeah again, I talked about it last week. There's a lot of projects. that this practice is dealing with at the moment. [00:33:00] So they need possibly more than, they're probably gonna make more than one hire. It's quite likely that will happen. They use BIM,

Stephen Drew: Gavin. They use BIM, just

Will Ridgway: saying. They use Revit in the office and they're basically inheriting a lot of these projects from stage three onwards.

Will Ridgway: So acting as executive architects, although perhaps not completely exclusively. Executive Architects as a whole. Residential, Affordable Housing, those are the types of projects, and you'd be working in Revit, Detailing, and if you're applying for the more job running, client facing role, then you'll do those two as well.

Will Ridgway: You'll do that as well. But yeah, cool cool company. And Lots of they do a lot of fun activities when COVID isn't around. We need that right now. Do

Stephen Drew: you reckon the fun activities on Zoom, little Zoom session, little exercise session? Oh, you know what you need to do? You need to go Mr.

Stephen Drew: Klein, have you seen my new thing, exercise thing, in your next book? I appreciate that. How is the CVs [00:34:00] coming on? Let's go. Good start, let's go. Yeah, we've definitely got more and more jobs this year, so that's what I wanted to convey. Moving aside, you can find all them jobs as well, and we can take it from there.

Stephen Drew: So I'm super, super excited about upcoming stuff. I've got some podcasts coming on the way, probably worth mentioning as well. I'm now a YouTube celebrity, just saying. My mom subscribed. I guilt tripped you to subscribe because you're now your employee. I run your team, so it's gonna be really awkward.

Stephen Drew: I'm gonna, I'm gonna literally ring you up, Will, on WhatsApp and make sure you subscribe as well. But oh my god someone unsubscribed this morning and I got really upset and then I realized I've got to stop looking at it. I've got to get a life. Do you know what I mean? Did

Will Ridgway: they unsubscribe when you brought out the little megaphone?

Stephen Drew: No, but now I'm worried about it. I want megaphone for a little while, but I can also do my voices as well. We haven't had voices [00:35:00] for a while, have we? Okay. I think we're pretty much there really. I think that's a good roundup for the Architecture Social show. We covered some videos, we covered events, just to go back into it you can join the community here and if you go inside because this is the outside of the community but you can log in and you can find everything we've talked about all the videos will be in the topic section as well so you can find all that if you've got any suggestions let me know or one or two other news while you're here.

Stephen Drew: Architecture Social.

Fun and Games: Dungeons & Dragons
---

Stephen Drew: We're setting up Dungeons Dragons. Look at that, six members. Six members. I'm serious. And we've got the fantastic Dungeons. It's going to make it really simple. Everything, I think I can say who is going to be doing it, so it's Ben Champion, right? So he's going to be setting it all up.

Stephen Drew: He's going to make it really easy. Last night in our book club, which is here, I already said that I'm going to be called I think I'm going to be an Orc called what did I say? Garen. Garen the Orc. Garen the [00:36:00] Orc. Yeah, and I've got my voice already so that if you enter my cave then I'll be like.

Stephen Drew: Who dares

Stephen Drew: enter? I am Garen the Orc. You smash. There you

Stephen Drew: go. I've got it all right. I'm going to be on Dungeons and Dragons with the voices. Proper roleplaying, that's amazing. Yeah, I'm doing it. Wow, the comments are coming thick and fast. I don't know who that is saying. Anonymous is saying it wasn't the Baron, Steve.

Stephen Drew: Wow, don't know what that means. We need to get your autograph, Steve, if you're a slayer, really. Oh, oh, I know what this is. This is the Baron saying he unsubscribed from my chat. I tell you what, Baron, if you unsubscribe from me, we're going to have an unsubscribe off, and I am literally going to unsubscribe from you.

Stephen Drew: I will do it live on the live stream. Don't dare me, I will do it live. So I just have a nervous breakdown, just start unsubscribing people online, going you did this, you [00:37:00] did that. Oh, I was getting really, I was getting, here we go. Gavin thinks that my chaotic evilness online is interesting. Good.

Stephen Drew: Ben is Head Dragon. Dr. Liz, if you're going to be playing with us, let me know what your character is going to be as well. I think Dr. Liz is going to be a wizard.

Will Ridgway: Yeah, I can't correct you a long time. What were you thinking of? No, I'm not very familiar with Dungeons Dragons, so I don't know like the whole concept of it.

Will Ridgway: Roughly, I do.

Stephen Drew: You see the Baron, Van, he's trolling me. He's been on the podcast. I'll take down your podcast as well. Chaotic, Neutral, Halfling, Warlock, yeah. Oh, do you know I'm World of Warcraft? Do you remember World of Warcraft? Let's bring up World of Warcraft really quickly. So I'm going to load up, I used to play World of Warcraft vanilla but, oh my gosh, we are so going off tangent.

Stephen Drew: Okay. So I used to play World of Warcraft vanilla, yeah, which was like this years ago. And during it, I used to [00:38:00] be I used to be an undead. Warlock. So Gavin, I am the real deal. I was an undead warlock and I used to raid in Molten Core. Just saying. Okay. Baron, it definitely is you and I'm definitely coming for you.

Stephen Drew: I'm taking down the podcast and also Gavin Rumbled, yeah. But you had me for a second. You have a Welsh name, the Welsh Wizard, the Welsh Warlock. Yes, that'll work. Do you, is Gavin still plays? Oh my gosh, do you know what I've got? I've got World of Warcraft, another classic. Gavin on the social, seriously, and I was speaking to Jack earlier, I think we're going to open up a gaming clan in the Architecture Social as well.

Stephen Drew: So we're doing it. I know you play games because you played with me, so we're going to get you on there as well. But here we go. Gavin is a Blood Elf Pet Hunter. I had a Blood Elf, but you know what? I love Warlocks. I still love Warlocks. I absolutely love it. But do you know what? Ever since I work in [00:39:00] McDonald Company, I had to give up.

Stephen Drew: I had to give up. Wow. I need some sad music. Here we go. Let me go for this thing. It is The best of times, it is the worst of times, but

Stephen Drew: I had to give up World of Warcraft.

Stephen Drew: Yeah,

Stephen Drew: it's sad, but

Will Ridgway: well,

Stephen Drew: give your weekly

Will Ridgway: words of wisdom. Oh, yes, I was waiting for this. I haven't prepared it anyway, but my weekly words of wisdom is that there are so many events, so many communities to get involved with.

Will Ridgway: Do something. Oh, I know one. Or stuck in lockdown, and just try and get involved and do something amazing. What's your one though, Steve? It might be Architecture Social. Oh yeah. That's an amazing community. Join that and be part of opening a group of people doing architecture and design, to construction.

Stephen Drew: Brilliant. Brilliant.

Final Thoughts and Farewell
---

Stephen Drew: All right I think that [00:40:00] was wise words of wisdom, and we can firmly say that the Badass Building Award of the Week goes to Rem. I'm sure Rem will be absolutely thrilled to hear from it. He's going to be like, what is this email in the spam inbox? Oh, do you know what I should do?

Stephen Drew: Do you know what we should do? We should literally, every time someone wins a Badass Building Award, I will do an email attaching to this, and I'll go to the company, Well done, you've won a Badass Building Award. And let's see, oh, and let's not aim for next week, Have a work in REN. Let's go for an architect that is middle ground, that might pick up my email and be like, What is going on?

Stephen Drew: And then we'll aim for the stars. I love it. This is brilliant. Okay. Epic finish. We're going to end on that note. Rem will be thrilled. He, I don't know. Dr. Liz, you gotta tell me. I don't think so. I think he will just be, I gotta be, I gotta get my tactic down. Thank you so much for everyone that's been here.

Stephen Drew: I will try to [00:41:00] look in the camera and practice this as well. Thank you for everyone that's been here. We will be here next Wednesday at one o'clock. So it's goodbye from me, Stephen Drew, and goodbye from Will Ridgway. And we will see you next week. Bye bye. Take care. Oh, look at that! I can't have my turkey arms.

Stephen Drew: Will lend me your exercise machine. Bye everyone.
