0056 - Let's Kick Off February, It's The Architecture Social Show!
===

[00:00:00]

The Epic Countdown Begins
---

Stephen Drew: The Epic Countdown. Coming soon. In 17, 16, 16 seconds. Now 14 seconds. Oh, we're getting there, we're getting there. Yeah, it's going to be 10 seconds. Yeah, okay, let's get prepared. Cool. I need to do my hair quickly. Yeah, I've got to do my hair quickly.

Will Ridgway: My beard. You haven't got no hair. Oh, no, let me shave my beard off quickly.

Will Ridgway: Oh, no, we're live.

Welcome to the Architecture Social Show
---

Will Ridgway: Hello. Hello, welcome to the Architecture Social show. I'm Wilbur Twait, and I'm joined by our local celebrity, Stephen Drew. How are you doing?

Stephen Drew: I'm all right, Wil. Yeah.

BBC Radio London Experience
---

Stephen Drew: I was on BBC Radio London at 11. 30, so it was literally me and the cleaners. Climb time! I know, it was the midnight shift, we've got to start somewhere, haven't we?

Stephen Drew: So basically they were like, we'll put you on, but as close to midnight as possible. They're like, when's the lowest amount of viewers? It was really fun, it was really fun though. How are you?

Will Ridgway: I listened to it. It was amazing. I thought it was [00:01:00] really funny. And I think if anyone really listened to it, they were definitely entertained by it.

Will Ridgway: I think it was a really strong performance by you, let's say. I say performance, but it was all true.

Stephen Drew: Oh, thank you. I appreciate it. The show goes on, doesn't it? And so we're here.

Architecture News and Updates
---

Stephen Drew: It's the Architecture Social show. And in true form, This week we're going to go, we've got news, and it is poorly organized, we're living up to the title that we originated what a strange week, isn't it?

Stephen Drew: Good news, some bad news, poor, we were just speaking before this, poor Sir Tom, is it Sir Tom? Yes, Sir Tom. What a reminder that we're still doing this pandemic, but that aside. We're going to, this week, let's focus on all the architecture cool stuff as well. And just so you know, have you seen in the background?

Stephen Drew: Oh, I forget I'm on the screen. So in the background soon, we're going to be doing the architecture I guess it's the shop now, isn't it? And the idea is we're soon I'm setting it up so that. We can all get architecture pictures.

Will Ridgway: I could do with a bit of a [00:02:00] background,

Stephen Drew: I'll

Will Ridgway: be

Stephen Drew: honest. You could as well.

Stephen Drew: I don't know whether you should do a drawing. How is your art skills? I've never seen them so far.

Will Ridgway: There's a reason why you've never seen them. Yeah. Not very good, that's all.

Stephen Drew: Fair enough. All right then let's take the focus on our we can't go to a barber's, can we? So we're let off for having big beards and looking like Castaway.

Stephen Drew: Let's go and jump straight into the good stuff this week. I hope everyone is not too stressed out on all this stuff.

Exploring Stunning Architecture Projects
---

Stephen Drew: I thought we'd start with a little bit of eye candy. Dr. Liz and I think Dr. Liz posted the article for this and I found the video as well. So thank you very much, Dr. Liz. Let's have a little look at this, but this is a beautiful building.

Stephen Drew: Yeah. Oh, let me mute it from me. There you go. I can, you hear me still? I can still hear you. Yes. All right. So this is the zine. Oh I go, do me a favor, go get the description up while we're here. So I'll talk about this beautiful. So basically it's this little like freestanding [00:03:00] black minimalistic cabin in the woods.

Stephen Drew: It looks beautiful. I'm loving the scroll effect. It's it's so relaxing while hearing your mouse scroll. That's how fast

Will Ridgway: it uses the scroll. I can't find, where is this that I'm looking

Stephen Drew: for? In architecture projects, I think.

Will Ridgway: Oh, the project section. I'm in the wrong section. It will help us if I'm prepared.

Stephen Drew: It's okay. I've been messing things around as well because we're always, part of the architecture is experimentation, isn't it? So we're getting there. How is everyone this week so far? Will? Yeah. Can you imagine going on Airbnb in this place? It does look cool. It does indeed. How do you get there though?

Stephen Drew: Is there is there a road

Will Ridgway: That's why it's so secure, because you have to go through 100 miles of snow and blistering cold winds to get there, but yeah, no I imagine there's a road nearby, just probably out of shot,

Stephen Drew: probably. You don't need the description anymore, Will.

Stephen Drew: I found it just fixed it.

Will Ridgway: Nah, we [00:04:00] finished the video! I was scrolling so fast, I don't know if I aimed it. Did you know it's a black painted cabin that Studio Cristo has elevated on a single column and hidden within a woodland near Salamajärvi National Park in Finland.

Stephen Drew: Wow, that's Did you know that?

Stephen Drew: Yeah. I didn't. But we got the next one. Don't worry, it's down below, Will, so while we play this one. This was something I really liked, here we go. Do you want to read the description? Is this the

Will Ridgway: Kensington one?

Stephen Drew: Yeah. Yeah. Don't worry.

Will Ridgway: Yeah. So a former ballroom in Kensington transformed into a contemporary living space.

Will Ridgway: So basically a modern renovation. of a former ballroom in a stucco fronted townhouse in kensington brings together high ceilings light feeding french windows and a varied material palette to elegant results what a beautiful sentence that was Yes, two bedroom apartment on Courtfield [00:05:00] Gardens in Kensington, and it's currently for sale, so you can actually go buy it.

Stephen Drew: How much is it for sale for?

Will Ridgway: I don't know. There's no link, unfortunately. That would have helped if there was a link there, Stephen for the sale site.

Stephen Drew: I think I can't put two links on. Because then what happens in the social is it doesn't go to the YouTube, it goes to the estate agents, which wouldn't be, it'd be a bit anti climatic, wouldn't it, oh yeah, I know.

Will Ridgway: Yeah, but see, you can buy it, so that'd be pretty cool. I don't know how much it's worth, probably a lot, I can't afford it probably, but

Stephen Drew: It's beautiful, I like it, it's quite quintessential London, but in the spirit of things, don't worry Dr Liz, this is one London project, we've got projects from all around the world to show you as well.

Stephen Drew: So look at this, we've got the fantastic Dr Liz. I didn't speak to Dr Liz yesterday. I'm getting to know her so well from the social. I was a little bit worried. I was almost going to drop her a message to check how she is. But I think she was really busy with work.

Celebrating Will's Birthday
---

Stephen Drew: Happy birthday, Will. Dr Liz. Oh, I forgot it's your birthday.

Stephen Drew: So in the spirit of that, Will, let me just get that. So [00:06:00] here we go. Can you hear this? Can you hear the sound on that?

Will Ridgway: Oh, I can't hear anything. Oh, you're

Stephen Drew: very lucky. My soundboard still doesn't work. I was going to do you, I was going to do you a song, but then can you hear the sound effects then?

Stephen Drew: Oh! So we got that, but the happy birthday, okay. So the rest of the soundboard, this soundboard is all going wrong. Okay. So basically these are random. These are random sound effects. So this one, which one is this one? It's just a sort of string instrument. Okay. Up, left or right? Go. Up, left or right? Left.

Stephen Drew: That's like Kensington, isn't it?

Will Ridgway: Hello,

Stephen Drew: up left or right?

Will Ridgway: Up right.

Stephen Drew: Bing! That was the sound. Oh my gosh. Here we go. Gotta be careful in Kensington. There's more tunneling buildings too. The whole lot will collapse, and that's because the tubes are new. Very interesting. Good afternoon. Good afternoon. Good afternoon.

Stephen Drew: Yeah, thank [00:07:00] you, Dr. Liz. That's probably more helpful than my sounds talking about some architecture. And let's talk about this project that Dr. Liz posted as well.

Will Ridgway: Yeah,

Stephen Drew: it can do. Let me put this in. So this, we're going to bring up the work. Remember we've got to be slow on that because I scroll too much.

Stephen Drew: Now, Dr. Liz posed an interesting question. Too much brick? Or you think it looks good? Okay, I think it looks good.

Will Ridgway: I can see the rest of the pictures, but I'll make my decision after I've seen them through. So you scroll very slowly.

Stephen Drew: So this is picture number two. It's quite interesting, it feels like the house is raised up and then you've got a house underneath it, haven't you?

Stephen Drew: Yeah, it does. Reminds me a bit of Oh, what's it called? Peckham Library. Have you seen them? I'll do a picture at some point, but basically the library is elevated from the stream. It's got like little sticks and you can go underneath it. Pretty. Oh, we'll have to do a bit [00:08:00] of the badass building soon. Hey everyone says happy birthday to you.

Stephen Drew: Oh, everyone. Yeah, I've now joined the 25s club.

Will Ridgway: I'm getting old.

Stephen Drew: Look at this. Is this the same building?

Will Ridgway: Is that the same building?

Stephen Drew: I think it's like old meets new. Yeah. This is the inside bit. I quite like this look. Me too.

Will Ridgway: I'll be honest, I like the brickwork, I'll be honest. Yeah, me too. Because I think it mixes well with the original build.

Stephen Drew: It's so you've got the old house and then that's like an extension. Yeah. I almost thought it was a house with itself. So that's a crazy extension. I love the brickwork in this personally. I can see how some people would find it a bit much. But I've always liked the brutalist effect and all this stuff.

Stephen Drew: And I know this isn't brutalism. What I'm on about though is big, punchy, bold architecture.

Will Ridgway: And I

Stephen Drew: quite like that. I tell you what, Will, can you imagine being the neighbors and then you go yeah, I've got an extension coming. And they're like, all right, yeah, it's probably a little [00:09:00] conservatory.

Stephen Drew: And then you've got that big brick monster in the garden. And they're like, what? You've lost our views. Yeah, it's just this monolith, which is just killing it. Look at these guys in here, they're in the window like this. Just like an angry neighbor.

Will Ridgway: They've probably got their own little conservatory that you can't see, they're just like tucked away.

Stephen Drew: You're going to have planning wars and they'll be like, okay, you're going to do that extension, I'm going to do another one.

Will Ridgway: So you might get

Stephen Drew: the same archetypes.

Will Ridgway: In the summer. I suppose in this When is this? It's Melbourne, is it? So it's, there's I don't know what the weather's like over there, but in the hot weather, it'd be amazing

Stephen Drew: to have.

Stephen Drew: Absolutely. Dr. Liz is fantastic, as I've got the link here for Packham Library, and I will bring that up for you really quickly. We'll roll this up. One of my favorite architects alongside Cedric Price. So we're the Peckham library, which I was on about you can see here, it's elevated from the stream.

Stephen Drew: So you can go in, but of course you've got the library up the top as well. So we'll all stop. Have you ever seen the architecture of Will [00:10:00] Allsop?

Will Ridgway: I don't think so. I don't think so. I'll

Stephen Drew: be

Will Ridgway: honest.

Stephen Drew: I really like Will Olsop. Look at this one as well. This is a crazy build. Oh yes, I have actually. I recognize this.

Stephen Drew: This is like an old library and then they had an extension. So this is actually the elevator going up, yeah? And then you have this in the air. How cool is that? Do people like it? I've been in the Chips building because that's in Manchester and that was quite interesting as well. And that's by a developer called Urban Splash, who also was the architect.

Stephen Drew: Can a McDonald's company afford to send Will to Melbourne to look at the architecture and experience the weather? I'll answer that on behalf of a McDonald's company. No.

Will Ridgway: No, I don't know.

Stephen Drew: I feel like that's going to be a bad that's going to be a bad conversation. I'd love to send you you'd be stuck in the airport anyways, mate, yeah, because they're stopping people getting

Will Ridgway: into Australia then, I think as well, aren't they? I think they've got a big channel back.

Stephen Drew: Absolutely. So mixing up the formula quickly.

MADCON and Upcoming Events
---

Stephen Drew: We'll talk [00:11:00] about, we'll also, it's all about Paul's pods, Paul's, it's all about Paul's pods. Just jumping in on quickly events. I've got an event coming up in February the 8th, released around the school. So I'm going to be there. If you're not sick of seeing me already on these live streams, you can join me there.

Stephen Drew: But I think it's five pound for that, but cheeky tip. Sorry, Lisa, I'm rumbling you here. If you wait a few days, it will be a live on her YouTube channel. So I think the five pound goes towards the production costs and all that stuff. So I totally get it. But if you're a part of the architecture social, when the reclips are, I will post the YouTube from Lisa's channel, but I'm excited.

Stephen Drew: To chat with Lisa and Lisa Rains for anyone that doesn't know she runs the architectural practice called Pride Road, which is a franchise business, which is really interesting because most architectural practices I've never heard one up until me and Lisa, that is a franchise. And I think she's looking for more people to be part of the franchise.

Stephen Drew: So if you want to get in contact [00:12:00] with me, I can introduce you. To Lisa, or you can reach out to her on LinkedIn. Let me say, oh yeah, I've got, I'm going to do one or two other things as well. Really quickly. Sorry. I know I asked you to do the events and I'm hijacking it. The other cool thing is the MADCON, which is on the Architecture Social.

Stephen Drew: It's the world's first, when you're like a drum roll, this is well, random sound.

Stephen Drew: Oh no, random, is that a good one? What was that? No, this is really eerie. It's like a, there you go. Okay. Okay. World's first architecture student fair online. There's free events. Look at all these events. So you can sign up to the Architecture Social. You can, I'll put the link to that here. And look at this, Will, right?

Stephen Drew: So the Architecture Social, if you're not signed up, you can go there, right? We've got loads of cool stuff coming. Oh, we've got the Dungeons and Dragons group and everything, but the MadCon, look how many events are in this [00:13:00] thing. Wow. You've got Studio Session Number One, Using BIM, Student Life and Beyond, What's Cooking, Hungry Designers, Talking with Tutors.

Stephen Drew: We've got Getting Started in YouTube, so I'm actually going to go to that one because that's relevant for me. I can't wait. Now that I'm a big YouTuber with 500 subscribers, including my mum and my dad and everyone I can And guilt tripping you because you work on my team. So Reba Futuractics are here.

Stephen Drew: So you've got all these events and you can sign up and you can go to it. And then you've got a place here to talk. Right now there's nothing really to talk about because it's about the events happening, but when it is I'm going to be setting up a zoom hangout. So if you want to go to the world's first Student, Architecture, FAIR, with all the guests, sign up to it.

Stephen Drew: It's at the MadCon, you can Google MadCon, and if you want to make your life easy as well, you, the Architecture Social is the host for that. What do you think, Will, about that? Does that seem cool?

Will Ridgway: Yeah, that seems amazing. Lots

Stephen Drew: of [00:14:00] events there.

Will Ridgway: Support for choice, really.

Stephen Drew: Dexter's my dog, Will. He's not, sadly, because I haven't made a Google account with Dexter.

Stephen Drew: Dr. Liz, if you haven't subscribed yet, can you subscribe? There you go. Please, Dr. Liz, help me. I need more. Yeah. I wonder what's the ratio of real subscribers I have, Will, versus my guilt tripped family and friends. 50 percent I reckon.

Will Ridgway: Yeah, but you've got to start somewhere, don't you? You've got

Stephen Drew: to start somewhere.

Stephen Drew: Got to start somewhere. And my friend, you know my friend Will McDaniel? He's a great YouTuber. He had 3, 000 YouTubers subscribe to him yesterday. Okay. It's taken me like a year to get 600. I was like, mate, help her out, brother. So anyways, we've got the MadCon, which is cool. There's other spaces on the Architecture Social as well.

Stephen Drew: I should do a shout out to my, one of my favorite guests that I've done on the podcast. And so we've got the Exceptional BIM Dojo, which is going to be like a social space because the Architecture Social and Exceptional [00:15:00] BIM. So if you've ever, Look at this. If you want a BIM instructor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, aka the Baron of BIM, is the man.

Stephen Drew: Don't worry, it's not a real BIM it's called the BIM Bazooka, but the Baron is actually don't worry, he's not part of World War III or anything like that. It's he actually is involved in the South African film industry. But part of me wanted it to be real world, I'd love

Will Ridgway: It looks like a cynical picture.

Stephen Drew: Yeah, and can you imagine being in the classroom with that and he just comes in on a helicopter and a big bazooka and he's load up your Revit models now! Absolutely love the Baron, and if you want to see his stuff, that would be great.

Stephen Drew: Dr. Liz, you realize if you message me on the Architecture Social, all the things pop up. Don't you worry. So we're getting Dr. Liz, your conversation is on the stream. Don't say anything that could be embarrassing. Okay, let's move on. Thank you, Dr. Liz. Don't worry, it's [00:16:00] all good. Oh yeah! This is the start of the YouTuber seminar that's coming up on the MADCON.

Stephen Drew: It's fantastic to have you here. I'm really honoured. Barrett we've got to be more professional again now. I'm getting there. Yeah, sorry. Yeah, it's

Will Ridgway: changed from poorly organised to very organised.

Stephen Drew: Oh, my days. Okay, cool. So let's go and have a little look at stuff. Oh, I got a little bit of eye candy.

Stephen Drew: Let's put on more, I found more drone footage, but it seems like New York is the hotbed. So let's just put a bit of this, because I fancy a bit of New York and wildlife, that's going on. We can do a shout out to the room.

Engaging with the Community
---

Stephen Drew: How is everyone feeling this week? Are you feeling stressed? Are you feeling happy?

Stephen Drew: Are you feeling optimistic? Are you feeling a little bit stressed out? Do let us know. Hi, Dr. Liz, being social as always. Will, how are you feeling this week, my friends?

Will Ridgway: Yeah, I'm feeling busy. But I'm also, I also can't believe it's [00:17:00] February already. I feel like we've been. We've been winter for so long.

Will Ridgway: Yeah. And we, but then it's suddenly February nearly at the end. And then we've got spring around the corner, which would be amazing. And then we have the nice weather again and I'm looking forward to actually having a summer, I'll be honest. Yeah. Assuming that's possible. Of course.

Stephen Drew: this this Yeah. That would be nice, isn't it? Yeah. I kinda feel that and look, I always want to go with an optimistic. Tone on the social podcast, because you've got to have an enjoyment in life, but you're right. I like this new world. I'm getting used to working online now, and it I can't imagine going back to the office anymore.

Stephen Drew: I can't imagine it for some reason. It's weird, isn't it? Here we go. Look at this. Dr. Liz, I was in Norfolk on Saturday. Spoke at a conference hosted there, but OBS didn't leave the home office in Cali. Ah, Dr. Liz was a guest for an American. That's great. That's great. I think you linked to that as well.

Stephen Drew: Dr. Liz is now my official favorite person on the Architecture Social. Move aside, Will. [00:18:00] Okay. I'm only joking. You're

Will Ridgway: amazing. It's all right. You can hit Dr. Liz on it instead of me. It's fine. I'll take a break. No,

Stephen Drew: sorry. I didn't. Yeah. You just try and get a break now. I know your angle. You're like, I don't know what.

Stephen Drew: Yeah. Let's be fine. But a nice bit of drone footage. Let's have a look at this. Look at all the news that Dr. Liz has posted here. Really interesting. I'm going to get one or two videos though, because I think videos always look good on the live stream. And then what we'll do is we'll talk about the bad ass building of the week, but I've got, I have got one or two more videos.

Stephen Drew: How nice. This is some of the amazing content that Dr. Liz has posted as well. Oh yeah. These are the bad ass buildings. I've gone to the wrong section in my own, Community. Look at this one. This was interesting, right?

Innovative Architecture Concepts
---

Stephen Drew: This is again, New York. Oh, do you want me to read the description? Oh yeah, can you?

Stephen Drew: So this is in the architectural industry news area. Yeah, I'm running that now. This is Dr. Liz. I think I'm going to get kicked off the show. I think it should be you, Will, and Dr. Liz.

Will Ridgway: Although my internet's not working. Oh, am I in the right? I can't [00:19:00] find it. I can't open up. I can

Stephen Drew: freestyle. So you've got this architectural practice.

Stephen Drew: I think it's called ODA. That's right. And they've got this concept for these cubes over Dumbo. And the cubes you can see in this clever design. So the architecture is this kind of cube. Cube. I wonder if it's modular. But I quite liked the way they've done with the CGI, where you've got these cubes in the air and it's cool.

Stephen Drew: And then you go to the architecture project, which is just quite a nice video. And here we can see you've got amazing views of Dumbo. I was in Dumbo. Dumbo is this amazing place, basically like in the end of Brooklyn. And you've had the bridge, your Brooklyn bridge. So I actually went, I was in Soho house.

Stephen Drew: Can you believe that? I snuck in so I was in Soho House and then you're out there and you've got this view. Dumbo is it's so amazing part of New York. I get travel sick when I I miss traveling when I do these videos sometimes. There we go. More important news, Dr. Liz has a [00:20:00] new office chair this week.

Stephen Drew: It was a lot of money, but it's very comfortable and ergonomic, so good for my back. Really worth investing such money in if you're spending hours at your desk. I agree. It's probably the most useful bit of advice that we've given on this whole show so far, and we're halfway into it. Yeah.

Will Ridgway: I think so.

The Importance of a Good Office Chair
---

Will Ridgway: I got myself a chair back in, I think, November and it's just wonders for my back.

Will Ridgway: Cause initially I had a little fold out chair, a little plastic fold out chair, which was awful. And I was like hunched over, whereas now I've got an actual property office chair. And it makes me much more productive as well.

Stephen Drew: Yeah, you need, you've got to, you've got to have a good set up in this day and age, and like in where we're all working remotely, I think it's really important.

Stephen Drew: I've got an errand chair, actually, I bought it second hand. And it's just amazing, to be honest. Oh, here, let's have a look at that.

Exploring a Live Stream
---

Stephen Drew: Luxury Life Tour, Dubai. So I'm tempted. Oh, that's this live stream now. So what happens if we click on that? Do we see ourselves? We see our past selves and we can see all the mistakes we made.[00:21:00]

Stephen Drew: I'm going to do that for fun. So let's see. So this is us now. Oh my gosh. There we go. Oh yeah. Look at this. This is going to be strange.

Fun with YouTube and LinkedIn Tunnel Effect
---

Stephen Drew: So how long does it do for a delay? And then, oh, we can get a tunnel going. Let's do that. So we're going to do a wave. Okay, I promise we're going to do about architecture news in a second.

Stephen Drew: Here we go, guys. Here we go. We've broken YouTube and LinkedIn. If we get

Will Ridgway: it timed up perfectly, we could make a little dance going on.

Stephen Drew: Yeah, I know. I'm, but that's, I'm not that smart. So we're going to, here we go. We go. We're doing it guys. Okay. We're going to get in one second. Oh, wow. It's interesting, isn't it?

Stephen Drew: Yeah. Oh, we got it. Let's bring up someone's comments as well. Curtis, here we go. Curtis says, highly recommend the same. Top tip, buy a secondhand reconditioned. They're brand new and a quarter of the price. I completely agree. I completely agree. [00:22:00] Now we get to send that comment into the abyss. There you go.

Stephen Drew: Yeah, there

Stephen Drew: you go. Hey, Curtis, good to see you here. We're going to track your comment into the abyss as well. Look at it. Look at

Will Ridgway: it, it just like travels down

Stephen Drew: the conveyor belt. It brings a whole new meaning to tunneling. Let's send Dr. Biz on the tunnel. I'm really proud of this.

Will Ridgway: This is brilliant, considering we were poorly organised with news.

Will Ridgway: This is amazing content.

Stephen Drew: Yeah, so what else have we got going on here?

Architecture Social Events and Awards
---

Stephen Drew: So we've got some events this week. Oh, look at the Architecture Social logo in the top right. That's cool, isn't it? Yeah, that's cool. That's cool. So Dr Liz is making her way down, Curtis is going down the tunnel. What else have we got going on this week?

Stephen Drew: Oh, we're going to do the Badass Building Awards soon. You know what, Dr. Les? I still haven't given out the other Badass News Awards. We're going to do that pretty soon as well. How is everyone this week? I hope you're well. I can see we've got some streamers. This is the [00:23:00] Architecture Social show, and we are really going off pace at the moment because I have got distracted because I found that we can create this tunnel.

Stephen Drew: So you can go to the Architecture Social. And soon we will be doing the badass building and so this is very poorly organized news because there is no news right now. It's just me and you here. Should we get rid of the tunnel, Will? Has it been in the long run? Yeah,

Will Ridgway: I think everyone's enjoyed themselves going down the tunnel.

Will Ridgway: There

Stephen Drew: you go. So simply join the two places, YouTube and LinkedIn. Obviously super keen. Curious, you are the best. Okay, guys.

Will Ridgway: No, tunnel's gone.

Stephen Drew: Tunnel's gone, my friend. Now we have

Will Ridgway: to come up with actual informative information now.

Stephen Drew: Oh, that's where I struggle.

Job Opportunities in Architecture
---

Stephen Drew: Okay we've got one or two projects this week.

Stephen Drew: I haven't uploaded as much because we have been busy. We have been busy with some jobs as well, and actually I haven't I've got, oh, we've got the job description on the McDonald and Company website, so we'll bring it up there, but I want [00:24:00] to talk about the new BIM's kind of hot right now. There's architecture roles, but there's BIM as well, so we may as well, while we're here, let's talk about it.

Stephen Drew: So if anyone doesn't know me and Will work at the McDonald and company team and architecture. So let's type in BIM manager and let's bring up your ad. We can both talk about it cause we're both working on it. Can't wait. But basically if you're looking to be a BIM manager right now, you want to work in a famous architectural practice based in central London get in touch.

Stephen Drew: They've got a big team. There's a, because there's about 300 people in size, they're looking for to take one of the leads on BIM. There's a few, there's a BIM structure there. I'm saying BIM so much in this sentence, but there's a BIM, there's, they've got a structure for BIM. They need a BIM manager.

Stephen Drew: There is a practice lead of BIM in this architecture practice, but it's so big, there's so many teams. You basically would be a BIM manager of several projects, several key projects. And we're talking like [00:25:00] the amazing architecture projects that you see on the scene. So if you want to be a world leading.

Stephen Drew: And you want to do amazing architecture projects, and you want to do the BIM on those architecture projects, then check out Will's role, which is called BIM Manager for Award winning studio, 45, 000, 55, 000. It's really good. Do we have to guess how the big architectural practices? Good question. There's, unfortunately in the world of recruitment, I can't say who the name of the company is until you get in contact with me.

Stephen Drew: Otherwise I would not bring anything in from the company and I would be fired. So unfortunately you have to call me up where I tell you the grand reveal. So if you want to find out and you're. If you're serious at BIM Manager looking and you want to find out, you can get in contact with me. But then you don't have to go for it, but I will tell you who it is on the phone.

Stephen Drew: Hey, that's like a new game for us, where it's guess the architecture practice and you see the over. Okay, cool. Let's just jump in.

Showcasing Architecture Projects
---

Stephen Drew: So let's go to the [00:26:00] projects of the week. There we go. All right. Okay. So I've done a few. So anyone that knows I'm on the Bowerbird framework, which means that architecture practices, they can submit their projects.

Stephen Drew: And then I can, I try in the evenings to put them on. I think I had a flurry of putting a few projects on the weekend. and then like during the week now we've just been so busy at will and we but it's good that we got a job so let's see okay so last week the winner of the badass building of the week was the greenhouse it wasn't them it wasn't this week okay.

Stephen Drew: Which ones are here? They're all quite nice actually. It's not fair to have the same architecture practice on both buildings, is it? So we'll have two. Okay. We've got the OG house. We'll do that first. Okay. Let's load it up. Helps if I click on it, doesn't it? So the OG house. Oh go to the architecture practice section on the front website.

Stephen Drew: Cause you can read out the description while I click through. You can [00:27:00] check all that out. So this is the old sheet house. This is I quite like the, how it looks here. Dr. Liz, tell me if I'm going too fast, too slow. Oh, here we go. So I've got the buttons here, right? I'm ready to go. Pitching number two, this beautiful kitchen.

Stephen Drew: Will, tell us what it's made of when you're in the OG house. Yes.

Will Ridgway: Yeah,

Stephen Drew: yeah. Perfect.

Will Ridgway: Basically it's I'll read the description. It's a curved seat, a curved seating leads up to a large Roof window to watch this new kitchen with natural light. Sorry, I can't speak at all. In this, I said all those words wrong.

Will Ridgway: In this Crouch End London kitchen side extension called OG House by Bradley van der Straeten Architects. I don't know if I said that basically externally a restrained pallet of recycled bricks. are playfully arranged while extensive natural oak joinery, battering and flooring create a simple and rich internal [00:28:00] palette.

Will Ridgway: So I really like that. I do the materials used a lot, and the colors as well that

Stephen Drew: come from those materials. They're so imaginative. It really puts it through my right into a shape. Yeah. It puts vital descriptions

Will Ridgway: and stuff like that to

Stephen Drew: shame. I know. The good thing is at least design in the architecture social, I get to build something where there can be content.

Stephen Drew: So that's fun. But if it was down to the content, I would struggle. What do you guys think? Is this the kind of place you'd like to live? Dr. Liz made me giggle when she says there's always a strategically placed bowl of fruit in the pictures. It's true.

Will Ridgway: Helps with the aesthetic.

Stephen Drew: Gosh, look how much alcohol is in this cart, look at this price!

Stephen Drew: Blimey now!

Will Ridgway: How long would that take to get through in a lockdown situation? Ah,

Stephen Drew: a week with me, probably, at this.

Will Ridgway: No, it would take a long time, Stephen, wouldn't it? It would take a long time, not a week.

Stephen Drew: Don't worry, I haven't really [00:29:00] drunk, but I did fall off the wagon the other Friday. Remember I told you, I was like, I'm not drinking during January, and then I totally fell off.

Stephen Drew: But I've done dry as January, so quite proud of myself. It's technically February, so let's, I'll try to keep it up again. Look at the, look at this chair in the background though. My, do you know the funny thing that is, it's just nice pictures here. My flat is never this neat. Do you know, I've got pictures when I was moving in and they're beautiful.

Stephen Drew: And like now I'm just like, oh,

Will Ridgway: yeah. Things lying around everywhere. Don't worry, I'll clean that up later.

Stephen Drew: Absolutely. We've got the plans here as well. Okay, let's jump on. So we, I quite like that in the badass building, we're keeping it quite localized. I think that this is quite, here we go. What do you think is how the box is hiding the one with a plant on the top?

Stephen Drew: Good question. Should we write to the Architects for Practice? They were like, what are you on about? Okay, let's do another house. Let's do a house. Oh, this is quite an interesting one. Stanyard's Cottage. Okay.

Will Ridgway: Stanyard's Cottage. I'm running over to it now as well.

Stephen Drew: Yeah, sorry. [00:30:00]

Will Ridgway: That's right, I was taking one with the snow, pictures with the snow,

Stephen Drew: that's cool.

Stephen Drew: Yeah, it's cool, isn't it?

Will Ridgway: So let me read out this one's a little bit longer. So Staniar's Cottage by Alter and Company is a quaint street, oh my gosh, is a quaint sticks and stones cottage which forms the heart of this family home situated in a grade two listed site and is set within a concealed location surrounded by scrub and woodlands.

Will Ridgway: So it's like really secluded which is really cool seeing no, no annoying neighbors playing that, loud music or anything like that. The role of play as a modality has also been a key influence that forms a looping internal landscape through which imparts a journey of varying expensive, expansive spaces.

Will Ridgway: Alongside this journey, sculptural landmarks were inserted between and into the building. Either as a way of contributing to this journey or diverting it. Yeah, so I think it's that's a rough description, [00:31:00] but yeah, you can see from the from the from these pictures, the sticks and stones feel to it.

Stephen Drew: Yeah, it's, I feel like it's

Will Ridgway: quite secluded as well, it's not in the busy areas. I don't know, where was it again? Where was exactly. Location, weight in the place.

Stephen Drew: I think it reminds me of a tree house Will. Yeah. Know what you mean? Like you up in the, it's got quite, this is quite a big feature isn't it?

Stephen Drew: I think it's really cool.

Will Ridgway: It's got a big cottage feel to it. A real cottage feel.

Stephen Drew: Yeah. I quite like it. But you can so guys, for today's badass building, so we've got the very, the London esque Beautiful Kitchen. with the fruit bowl which is really aggravated Dr Liz and oh you've got oh you've got this kind of like cool actually i'm gonna you know there's no fruit bowl in this one though they've only got

Will Ridgway: they've got a plant in the middle of the table that's really

Stephen Drew: you've got this net at the top that's cool oh and oh yeah so you feel very elevated i quite like this for being different but i think the london okay i made it difficult because the london one i would really [00:32:00] like because i live in london So it works for me and also if I say the London place, Dr.

Stephen Drew: Liz is going to kick me out for being London centric again. So I'm inclined to say it's the Treehouse, but they're both beautiful and both different. They're both different scales as well. I tell you what, for next week I'm going to get two London ones and we'll have a London battle off and then we'll have an outside of London one because I think we'll make it fairer.

Stephen Drew: But what kind of place would you like? Would you really go on? Forget that, we're going to live in the countryside in the really cool projects.

Will Ridgway: I'll be honest, I think I prefer the countryside. I don't know, I feel like this is a great, this would be like a great place to go for like a whole, spend a week there, secluded and I don't know, maybe like in the winter as well.

Will Ridgway: Mainly because when I was younger, I used to go to like cottages in the winter and spend like a week there. And it just reminds me of that sort of warm feeling. That's what I like about the

Stephen Drew: cottage. Yeah, I agree. You can have a picture. I would say guys, which one you want to [00:33:00] go for? I'm voting for the cottage than this one, but I do think that the London flat is good.

Stephen Drew: Will, is the bad ass building of the week probably going to be Stania's cottage? What do you think?

Will Ridgway: Yes, for the same reasons as you though.

Stephen Drew: Okay. And Dr. Liz and Curtis, if you're still there and anyone in the audience, don't be shy. You can participate. What's your thoughts on these? Do you like them? Do you not?

Architecture Social Community and Resources
---

Stephen Drew: So for anyone that wants to see these as well on the Architecture Social, I do post these, but this is on the website as well, because with the Architecture Social community, you have like the community forum, have part of it, and you've got the front of the website as well. So here we go, Dr. Liz has kindly posted the link to it, but we don't need to go to Amazing Architecture, Dr.

Stephen Drew: Liz, because you can go on the architecturesocial. com and you can check out their you can check out the project there. I'm going to show you quickly on the stuff I've been developing as well. So Curtis, who is in the audience. I've got his company on there as well. So what we're doing is we're building up a [00:34:00] list of all the architectural practices, that's the goal, all the architecture practices of the world.

Stephen Drew: And you can see here, you can either do it on the map, you can zoom in and we can get all the projects, locations. Oh, let's zoom in here. I'm going fast. Sorry, Dr. Liz, but you've got Pride Road. Remember I told you earlier, Lisa? So I've got them on the website. I've got so far some London centric. We've got BIM in Africa.

Stephen Drew: We've got everything, man. This is so cool. And so Curtis is, he's got his own architectural visualization company which is beautiful work called Abstract Canvas. And so we can check out some of the stuff here, like this beautiful lady on this big desk, she's thinking like. Where did I put my stapler? I don't

Will Ridgway: have a big desk now because of COVID

Stephen Drew: distancing.

Stephen Drew: Yeah, two meters built into the desk, that's pretty genius. But you can check that out, you can get in contact and you can find all the details for Abstract Canvas. So that's a good example of [00:35:00] the use of the Architectural Social. And then I will post it. In the community, a link to this. So they'll weave in and out of each other.

Stephen Drew: And people can use this as a resource and talk about it on the Architecture Social. So the idea, last bit of it so for instance, with Stania's Carthage, you could then click on the architecture company, you can learn about them, and then we can click discuss, and what that will do is that will take you.

Stephen Drew: Inside the Architecture Social, where you've got a link here, and then the goal and the line is, people can comment. Amazing. I like this. It is the Badass Building, oh my gosh, of the week. Submit. Whoop. There you go. The

Stephen Drew: Badass Building of the Week. Nice plug. No worries. Because, you're a friend of the social. Absolutely love it. Here we go, look, Curtis, do you have a fruit bowl in your office? Really important [00:36:00] question, and Noor from the Architecture Social, oh yeah, I've got to post your book, Noor, it's your one day out of the book competition for last month.

Stephen Drew: I'm going to send that, probably probably not today now, probably tomorrow. Thank you for your patience. And whoa, I'm going to put up another book competition again today. So we're getting there. We're getting there. I'm going to put more and more events. So we can just have a quick look on the Architecture Social.

Stephen Drew: I've got one or two, I've renamed the group bit spaces. Cause I think it's a little bit more architectural. We've got stuff coming up. We've got the Mad Con. Dojo and drop a message to Arnold Schwarzenegger. Baron the BIM. And say hello, learn BIM. Oh yeah, I've got as well. Look at this, right? Oh, now we're going to go big.

Stephen Drew: So I'm launching InDesign, the production line. Do you like that? It took me like a whole evening to think of that. So we've got here a shop and soon the idea is. You can, oh, there's a lot of comments here. I haven't looked lately. I need to look. [00:37:00] You can soon publish your own architecture work, dust it off, get it up.

Stephen Drew: And we're going to put this on the architecture social store where you soon, you can buy. The work here, I've got to I've got to tweak it well, okay, because I, I'm trying to build an Amazon, I've built a community forum, I've got my Amazon affiliate, I need to calm down. But once this is worked, you can then get a print of some of the student's artwork, The cost will go towards the running of Architecture Social, but more importantly, back as well to the person who made the artwork.

Stephen Drew: So I like that concept because, it keeps things going. And look at this, right? I've gone to town with it. Joel Wallace. Now he has given me permission to do this as well. We're going to split the profits and the profits are not huge. Don't worry. I'm not going to be running around in a limousine, but it would be nice to pay the server costs and everything.

Stephen Drew: And check this out. Do you want a shadow and [00:38:00] color flip flops? Yes, I do. I think they're actually really good. Aren't they? I was like, they work really well. They look really cool. What do you think, Dr. Liz? Should I send you some flip flops for being such a good sport on the Architecture Social? There we go.

Stephen Drew: And soon, I've been experimenting, so I've got a copy of this coming soon. I hope they fit. I have got, I've got large, but I want to go back to my mediums, Will. I'm going to let you know what these are like. I'm going to start wearing them on the Architecture Social. Look at this woman with this beanie. She just looks too real.

Stephen Drew: I need to get real people. Should I just put me with the beanie with my double down like that?

Will Ridgway: Let's keep the models there. Just keep the models.

Stephen Drew: So what's coming next week is this t shirt. I've got, so I've got this t shirt coming. That's going to go on the live stream. Now for anyone that would be thinking that's a bit of a lower t shirt, tell everyone what my fashion sense is like in the normal.

Stephen Drew: Pre pandemic. It's basically that t shirt, I'll

Will Ridgway: be honest. I'll sit you down to a tea, literally, Steve. Yeah, [00:39:00] I love it. It's just loud. You're a loud person in terms of what you wear. How cool is that t shirt? That's pretty good. When are you getting yours?

Stephen Drew: This week, I hope it fits. Back on my diet. You can check that out.

Stephen Drew: You can check everything there. And also as well, the other thing that I've built is, here we go. My face everywhere. Oh, I'm getting sick of myself sometimes as well, but hopefully the content that I provide is helpful to some people. You can find out how all the YouTube videos and all this stuff is on the Architecture Social as well.

Stephen Drew: And wouldn't it be great to get my. Face like a million times off. Let's get some more videos from the community as well. But all of that, and the podcasts we do are on the architecture social website as well. I did Oh, look at this. So I've actually moved the podcast from being just online and video to, sorry, just audio to video as well.

Stephen Drew: So now if anyone wants to be a guest, we can do that as well. So that's the news from [00:40:00] me. Hey, look who it is! This is the creator of the flip flops! Amazing! This is Wallace! This is Wallace! Isn't it amazing? Look at his artwork, isn't it amazing? I've got it on the wall! That's it, Wallace. It's a small one, but I'm gonna, I'm gonna show you how it, it's bit, so the other one, the big one would be double the size.

Stephen Drew: Will. I've ordered that as well. Look how cool this is the big difference between like my flat, which is not as sexy as this one and the design one, but look, it is work. Huh? Cool. I know. I know. He's such a, and he's such a nice guy to chat with him as well. We're trying to work out the postage because. If, the problem is when you go outside of the UK or EU or America, the postage ramps up, but we're going to try and get the costs down and we're going to try and do it.

Stephen Drew: So that's all from me so far and Will. [00:41:00] Okay.

Weekly Words of Wisdom and Closing Remarks
---

Stephen Drew: What is your weekly words of wisdom? My Do I get music this time? No, because the soundboard's got it. You can get

Will Ridgway: That's the brain.

Will Ridgway: My weekly words of wisdom Ah! is that I don't know. Obviously we're still in a national lockdown, but every day that we wake up is a step closer to a week. Us being free from this current world we're living in and into this new world. So keep on living. Keep on living. Yeah, I just keep on waking up.

Will Ridgway: Every, every day is getting closer and closer to eventually leaving this madness that we're in at the moment. So keep on living. Keep them

Stephen Drew: going, that's trying to be motivational, I'm confused as Boris is about what that I forgot to do all the memes. Have I shown you them?

Stephen Drew: I've got loads of memes as well. Yeah, we've got loads of memes at the show. There you go, look.

Will Ridgway: Okay, maybe I'll think of some better weekly words the next week. That's what I [00:42:00] do. That's my weekly wisdom to think of something for next week.

Stephen Drew: As always, Will, an absolute pleasure and thank you so much for everyone that tuned in.

Stephen Drew: And I think today's been a wild ride. What was your favorite moment? Did you have fun? Do I need to get my script better? I probably do. And did you enjoy the tunnel effect? That was a special moment. No, Will didn't enjoy the tunnel. Groundhog Day will end eventually. And wow. That just sums it up a lot better than I did.

Stephen Drew: Look at this. I've got you covered, Curtis. Oh, it's Groundhog Day. Yeah, and I've got another one. Look, here we go. Here we go. Look at this. I'm fed up with life. That's how I feel this week. One of these ones, isn't it? Thank you so much, everyone. Here we go. Curtis, like the tunnel as well. This is, I've been Stephen Drew, joined by the fantastic Will Ridgeway, the most patient man in the world, which puts up with the absolute unscripted madness that comes on this show.

Stephen Drew: But [00:43:00] Will, thank you so much. Everyone in the audience, Curtis, Joel Noor. Dr. Liz who else has been here as well? Golsh, I hope I'm saying that golsh. All right. You drop me a message and say, Stephen, you need to get your stuff together. Aliyah, Slavos, we got everyone. This has been a really good, fun stream and we'll see you next week.

Stephen Drew: Take care. Thank you

Will Ridgway: very much. Take

Stephen Drew: care, bye.
